LEAPS TO HIS DEATH Excessive drinking is thought to have caused George 8. Bmecth, the son of a wealthy Chicago man, to commit suicide at the Arlington hotel yesterday afternoon. The young man leaped from the top floor of the hotel into the alley below, a dis- tance of seven stories. His #kull was fractured and every large bone in his body broken, Death was instan- taneous. There are several things that induce the authorities to believe that he committed suicide. A couple of days ago ke was in the city jail to sober up. This was at the réquest of his friends, He waa turned out yerterday morning and went to the hotel where he at once repatred to the barroom. There he made the remark that the le from the back entrance to the alley would not be great enough. The bar- tender thought little of the remark at the time, but It now confirms the suicide theory. Late in the after- noon the young man went to h room and later returned the room key to the office. After that he went to the top story and from the fi encape on that floor leaped to his death. Several people maw the act, Coroner Hoye was notified and sent the body to the funeral parlors of Bonney & Stewart. ‘The suicite’s father is at the head of a large foundry concern, in Chi- cago, and his brother 1s a prominent attorney the $290,000 IN GOLD A tast passage brought the steam- ship Oregon, Capt. When seen this morning in the one little room where she lives with her mother, Mra. Fetteriy, she was sob- bing as if her heart would break and for 4 while was unable to talk. The mother feels dreadfully and speaks with quivering lips. She seems to be & most respectable woman and says she realizes most keenly Uh sorrow which has been cast on hi daughter's life by William Fetterly the man who ought to have been to & great extent her ector. ‘The story In substance was told in last night's Btar, William Fetterly was arrested in| Judge Tallman’s court upon the evi dence given by Mattie Sioan in her mother's divorce case, in which, on @ writ of habeas corpus, the plaintiff had been ordered to produce Lily May, a 4-¥ Id child, whom Fet- shed to obtain possession of. EVERY ONE WONDER AT THE WAY THEY CHANGE THEIR MINDS ‘The members of the council com- mittee on fire and water have ex- eouted the most astounding flop of the series of myrations that they have perf recently on the building ordinance proposition. ‘One month ago in making a report ‘on the Moore proposition to substi- tute wood lath for metalllc lath in the construction of the Aroade, Lum- ber Exchange and Curtis buildings, Dr. Crichton, as chairman of the committee stated that in his opinion ‘and in that of the members of the committee, the proposed substitute was as safe as the materials specified in the bufiding ordinance Ohers aid not think so, and after an ineffective attempt to freeze Mr. Moore out, his request was at lest granted, after several councilmen had exhibited a change of heart that Bering sea. The Oregon had 184 pas- | remains unexplained To Make Good When this measure grant! special privileg passed at the n two weeks ago, in order to make good, it was decided to amend the butlding ordinance #0 as to conform to the #pecial privilege granted Mr Moore. At the last meeting of the council this measure to amend the butiding ordinance was introduced. At the game time Wiliam Noonan fled @ petition for a special privil ening | ated that It) ten seen after bis day's work was done, to walk to the seashore, where sitting on some lonely rock, he woul gaze for houre Bxedly to the west- lward. Mattie Sloan, Mrs. Fetterly’s daughter, was then called to tetl her [story of ‘the man's total depravity. ‘The mother deplores the necessity of having to introduce the evidence {which only her unfortunate daugh- ter could give. Fetterly has annoyed the girl since ae 13 yeare of age, but, Matte says, did not ac- complish his evil designs until ‘as between 15 and 16 years of age. “Goared Me” “Ho frightened me almost to des. by threatening to kill me if I toid | mamma,” Mattie eaid in conversa tion this morning as she again buried her tear-stained face In her pillow. “I didn’t know what on earth to he sobbed, “I told mamina that noyed me by coming into my ad she changed ty bedroom again came into my room a few months ago T couldn't stand Hany longer. 1 didn't care if he did kill me. jvud as I could, Refore mother could get upstairs he had beaten me until similar to that given Mr. Moore. His petition and the bill to amend the ordinance were referred to the fire and water committee. Last night, notwithstanding, its re- cent position that metalic lath was no fire protection in the Arcade, Lumber Exchange and Curtis build Inge, the fire and water committee decided that metallic lath was not only a good thing In stairs and hall- ways, but all over a butiding. ‘Thus, now that Mr. Moore vided for by the grant of the privilege of using wood lath through- out his bulldings, the committee de- cides to draw up an ordinance spec- ifying that metallic iath shall be used throughout buildings — con- structed after the passage of the or- dinance within the district bounded by Elliott bay, thence east along Pine atreet to Second avenue; See- ond avenue to Pike street; Pike street to Fifth avenue; — thence utherly to 120 feet south of Union rect; westerly to 120 feet east of Third avenue, thence to Yesler way; easterly to Fourth avenue south; thence to King street and south to the bay. ‘This district does not tncfude all of the present fire district and the provisions of the old ordinance spec- ifying that metallic lath shall be used in the stairs and hallways will remain in force in the gection of the first fire district outside of the spec- {al digriet named above and also in the second fire distritt Mr. Noonan’s building tn which he asks the privilege granted J.
