Wits S35 lof hiding at Greenwood cemetery, just north of Woodland park STORY OF THE MAN HUNT: Continued from page one) racy, the Oregon desperado, is still uncapture Phat jhe has completely baffled his purs and made his escape ee om this county is not definitely known heriff Cudihee, » Spent the night at Bothell, was interviewed by the Star's staff correspondent at 7 o'clock this morning and acknowl edged at that time that he wasat a loss which way to tum | In this city also, there is a lull in the excitement of the chase The 1 t and most plausible rumor regarding Tracy’s wher to the ears of Sheriff Zimmerman abouts came and was by him report It was to the ef. Snohomish county ed to Under Sheriff t that late last might Corcoran of this city fee k Jast evening had appeared se just north of Tracy at about 9 o’cl at a lonely house Woodland Park, w near Murphy's slaughter hot and had there obtained The news by south from Everett and who reached the supper s brought to Sheriff Zimmerman two members of his who had come house soon after Tracy had departed | REMAINED NEAR WOODLAND j The theory now most generally entertained among the of- jficers who are hunting Tracy is that the bloodthirsty and | jdesperate convict was at no time yesterday very many miles Sheriff time last encounter with at from Woodland Park where his |Cudihee’s men was had late Thursday night, which |Neil Rawley and Policeman Breese were killed | Men who have been pursuing the convict ever since he jescaped from the Oregon penitentiary are most firmly of this belief. They say that Tracy is a typical tramp in one respect, namely, that he has never since his escape willingly traveled otherwise than along some railroad line. ry is that | Tracy spent the day sleeping in the thick woods to the north |ward of Woodland Park, hoping when night came to be able to reach the railroads again and escape from the country by the brakebeam route To a certain extent this is also Sheriff Cudihee’s theory The sheriff is firmly convinced that Tracy is attempting to escape to British Columbia by following the Seattle & Inter- national railroad which runs north from Seattle past Ballard, Their the through Fremont, Latona, Ravenna, Pontiac, Bothell and Woodinville Junction in this county, thence om through Sno: homish, Skagit and Whatcom counties to Blaine on the Can- Jadian boundary line. SHERIFF CUDIHEE’S BELIEF Although there was every reason yesterday morning to jbelieve that Tracy was still near Woodland Park or travél ing toward salt water north of Ballard, Sheriff Cudihee had la “hunch” that the convict would pursue his favorite course of |doubling back on his trail and reappear along the railroad be tween Fremont and Bothell | Therefore, when at about noon yesterday Cudihee received |news that Tracy had been seen by two men between Ravenna |park and Bothell, he at once left the Woodland park posse in lother hands and started for Bothell in an open buggy, accom- [panied only by Deputy Sheriff McClellan of Thurston county | McClellan has been on the trail of Tracy and Merrill ever since they crossed the Columbia river, and is an old-time man-hunter. | It was the sheriff's strong hope that he and McClellan jwould overtake Tracy along the road before he could reach |Bothell, and end the chase then and there. Cudihee is a man of cool, imperturbable courage whose theory is that the less help a peace officer has, the better, where he is dealing with a | desperate criminal McClellan is another man of the same stamp. He was armed with a yo-40 Winchester repeating rifle ‘of the latest model, while Cudihee had a long-barreled Colt’s re- volver. Had the two overtaken Tracy, it would have been a battle to death, 18 GRIEVED OVER DEATHS “I would have had Tra: v, at the Van Horn house last {night if I had been left alone,” said Cudihee to a Star reporter before leaving for Bothell. “I feel sick at heart when I think how unnecessary was the killing of Policeman Breese and the other man Rawley at that place. I told Breese particularly, and others at Fremont generally, that I wanted no help, when I jstarted for Van Horn’s, where I had heard positively that | Tracy was eating supper. Breese not only wasted his own life, but prevented me from carrying out my own plan, by coming between me and Tracy at the critical moment. It was a ter rible blunder on his part, which cost his own and another good man’s life.” | Cudihee and McClellan drove like mad from Fremont to Bothell, 15 miles. Along the road they kept a sharp lookout for | Tracy, and made inquiries at every house and of every person met. Cudihee was convinced that he had been led off on a false scent, and so informed a Star staff correspondent who arrived at Bothell soon after on the special train which brought a posse sent to follow the sheriff by Under Sheriff Corcoran. This special left Seattle at3:15 yesterday afternoon and carried nearly a score of regulit and special sheriff's deputies, headed by Quilter, Schneider, Clark and Berner. When Bothell was reached, Cudihee told Qui ter how the ground lay, but or dered that, as a measure of prefiution, members of the posse be seattered along the railroad from Woodinville to Ravenna park to prevent Tracy from escapitg north by that route. } Quilter and six deputies rmained at Woodinville. Others were sent to Derby and some came back to Bothell and Pon They Aun into One Another tiac. Deputy Clark and a few men returned to this city on the special train, arriving at 7:30, and were at once sent out with other posse’s to guard the railroad junctions south of the city, including Renton, Black River and Argo, and the suburbs of |South Seattle, South Park, Georgetown and Renton. Others jalso went north to investigate a rumor that Tracy out MAY BE IN SEATTLE Among the police officers of the city there is a strong be { that Tracy has been attempting to enter the city from the north, and may have done so last night.
