Jackson, F. A. G. 8 of Seattle and Alaska, his hed a eorrowful experience in the far Eastern portion of the United States 4 He has been cruelly deprived of a number of big medals by the direc- tora of the Charleston exposition, who claim that he secured them by truthful representations concerning his prestdency of the graphical society. Mr. Jackson is a remarkable man loosely combining a great many estimable citizens of Seattle, inctud- a tng all of the editors of the daily papers, Into a society for the discovery Of Alaska. It didn’t matter that Alaska had been located half a dozen times. Mr. Jackson was determined to discover tt himself, in the name ‘of the society, after collecting annual dues of one dollar a head. For three or four years he regularly elected himself president, and stilt col lected dues. The treasurer was a modest Individual, whom Jackson dis Gained to associate with, and the two were seldom seen speaking to i gether. In fact, few people knew who the treasurer was, on account o : his retiring disposition. Occasionally President Jackson issyed a quarterly magazine, well filled with Seattle advertisements, and some carefully clipped selections ji from other publications, Interspersed with “cuts” borrowed from the newspaper offices. Finally, when the interest of the members, including honorary vice presidents Admiral Dewey, the Sultan of Turkey and the Prince of ‘Wales began to flag, President Jackson determined to assall the Pole. His plan was to borrow a sleigh and reindeer from Santa along with some telephone instruments for sending back the news, and then, when the spring sunbeams were slanting across the Arctic tc i make a grand 24-hour rush for the pole, telephone back the glad tidings, shoot @ polar bear, and return with enough glory for the Alaska Geo- = Graphical society to make the members willing to pay dues for the re- i mainder of thelr lives. His reindeer were to be fed on com 4 hay ba carried in capsules in the back of the sled. ‘When the project fell through, owing to the surprising lack of In- terest of the members of the society, Mr. Jackson appealed to the In- ternational Geographical congress, In season in Berlin, but met with «ts ‘appointment there also. Nobody was willing to ask Santa Claus for the Joan of his acclimated reindeer and private sled. In the meanwhile dues were coming tn slowly. The eight hundred F Beattie members of the society were getting next to themselves, and = ‘were demanding value received. : Mr. Jackson ventured East, to the Pan-American exposition. There ‘he complied a great inter-planetary society for the discovery of other worlds, and the mapping of the same. He included, as usual, the Prince of Wales and the Sultan of Turkeyin his list of honorary vice presi- dents. Then, arming the society with a $10 telescope, for the purpose of beginning its investigations, he started oyt after members, as he had done in Seattle. Just what measure of success he attatned is not yet known here, but it seems that he finally drifted do@a to Charleston, 8. C. to the ex- position, and captured medals of brilliant hue and rare design, which ‘Were giadly handed to him for his researches on the moon. ‘The % telegraphic despatches tell why the commissioners recovered — thiese It is all very comical, despite its pathetic side. The pathos of the Hes with the members of his various societies who paid their dues like little men and thought they were getting something. | One of these days Mr. Jackson will probably return to this city with &@ Rew plan for the discovery of China at one dollar a head.
