Probably not one. He has fought with laughter more successfully than any other Hving man. ‘Well, Mark Twain ts on his feet again, has paid all of those publish ing house debte—a hundred thousand dollars or so, contracted by extrata gant partners, which he was not compelled by law to pay, and has just purchased for himself a $47,000 country mansion on the banks of the Hudson, next door to Helen Gould, and has settled down to enjoy his old age in the midst of plenty Everybody will be glad to hear tt. No one will envy Mark Twain his good fortune. He deserves every bit of it ‘The story of his business troubles is well known to the the herotc efforts which he put forttf, prompted by a high sense of hoi to pay off debts which would have crushed any ordinary man tn his d clining years. ‘He was an old man with whitening hair, when Fortune and the fault of others left him stranded and penniless, after a lifetime of honest and brillant work. He would seem to have deserved a better fate, yet his trouble never calied forth a protest from him and never onc e him deapadr. He took up his pen and wrote and wrote, long hours each a grim determination that nothing could alter. If Death came it would find him at his task, unless th paid. Fifty thousand dollars a year and more he earned, and note after note held by creditors was taken up and cancelled. Withih two years’ time he had wiped out the last dollar of the claims, and then he put coin for himself into his empty purse. ‘The world, overstrained, weary with dally toll, hungered for his lines, laughed over them—end paid the bills. ‘Within a few months Mark Twain was again able to sign his check for thousands. The money fairly rolled in upon him. It came from far and near, Everybody, including his ex-creditors, respected him. The world knew him in a new light, no longer merely as a writer and a hum- orist, Dut as a shining example of exalted character, one which tends to uplift mankind on the moral plane. Today Mark Twain stands many times higher in the estimation of ‘the people than he did before the days of troubles came upon him. Let him prosper! He weil deserves the best Fortune can bestow. _ AR ECHO OF MT.
