POV OOO: Twenty-five Cents a Month Gy Mall er Cai 099990000000 RATE WAR ON THE YUKON A Fare of Only $5 Is Now Asked From Lake Bennett to Dawson City. ILL FEELING BETWEEN COMPANIES Has Led to the First Arctic Transportatio Fight-Now Cheaper to Go to Dawson Than to Stay at Home. ‘The steamship Humboldt, which arrived from Skagway thts morning, Brought the intervsting news that a flerce rate war had broken ovt at Lake Bennett between rival Yukon traneportation companies competing for passenger trac to Dawson, and that the rate charged after June 4 Would be $5 for first class pessage from Lake Bonnett to the Kiondike Metropolis, meals not included. ‘The first agxressive move in the direction of rate war was made on May 2 by the Bennett & Atlin Lake company, operating Steamer Hailey. The company then announced that the rate to Dawson, Beginning with the opening of navigation, would be $10 per passenger, canvas cots in cabin included. Meals would also be served at an extra charge of $1 each. ‘The unexpecte! announcement created quite a etir in Bennett City ami Skagway, as there had been no premonition of a cut. The rival transportation line, known as the Canadian Development company, fol- lowed the next day with a flaming adverthement in the Skagway papers, that the company's beats Australian, Columbian, Canadmn and Angetican, running between Bennett and Daweon, wouk! also carry passengers to the Klondike for $10, meals not included. ‘This was only the beginning of the flurry, however, On the day when the Humboldt left Skagway, both transportation companies ai nownced a further cut to $1, the Bennett & Atlin Lake company taking the lead. It was prophesied that a cut to $2.00 would follow, Tt Is stated that the rate war le a direct reault of the bitter enmity Detween the rival companies, and that each is seeking to run the other out of businers. The travel by way of the lakes and upper river fell off Materintly last fall, owing to the competition of the boeata from St. Mi- chaei. and {{ appears as though the strugwle for buamess engendered the Ul-feeting. The prospects for a keen competition this summer between the Bt. Michael boats and the upper river boate may also have proved an inducement for the announcement of a cut that would tend to draw travel to Dawson by way of the lakes and the upper river. * No arnouncement ts made as to the length of time that the cut rates ‘wilt remain inferee. [t © ponsible that the mate war will be of long duration, but the chances seem to be decidedly against this condition expense of operating the steamboats on a $5 fare basis would soon up the spare capital of the competing companies, It ie consideret ble that « fare of $19, with increased freight recetpts, would unerative. owing to the decline in the prices paid for labor on but fact has not yet been demonstrated. It te regarded the ultimate established passenger fare from Hennett t exoned $35. amd that thiv figure may be the final rate will be permanently adjusted this summer. $5 rate continues tn foree for awhile, the cost of a trip from Dawson will be as follows: ebeyeag a af i : g Jet clase nd clase From Seattle to #hagway.. «oe «6085 $16 Skagway to Bennett ....,.. . 10 10 Bennett to Dawson .. eseveees 6 o 3% days—1l meals on Yukon at $1 " " 51 2 The Yukon river boats expect to begin reeular trips between Bennett end Dawson on or about June 4, as the ice has nearly disappeared.
