If the pres- ent weather keeps up for a week the local owners will be able to get through to Del Monte. This is the objective point of many of the new owners. They all want to ml‘ke the trip to the sea. . . Frank H. Johnson of San Rafael has just purchased a big Thomas fiier. Johnson is one of the earliest enthu- siasts in the city. He has been trying out his new car and has sent in the most flattering reports to the Ploneer Automobile Company, from whom he | purchased it. 3 As soon as the roads are in con- dition Johnson will start on a tour |across the continent. He has made sev- |eral extensive trips in his automobile, | but this will be the longest one he has ever attempted. He will go without a chauffeur, as he feels it will not be a |necessity to take one along. Mrs. John- son and the baby will be the passen- gers. | his second Thomas fifer. . . The Pioneer Automobile Company re- ports the arrival of a carload of forty- horsepower Thomases, which were un- loaded yesterday. At the same time a carload of Wintons came in. All of these cars are sold. . . . Three carloads of Oldsmobiles arrived yesterday and will be unloaded this morning. All are of the touring car pattern. . The first automobile show in America was held Septémber, 1900, at the Wash- ington Park track, Chicago. Practically all of the makers then d#ng business exhibited, and it is a curious fact that of all the exhibitors the Winton Motor Carriage Company is the only one now doing business in the same product, in the same name, in the same city, and under the same owners as then. Some of the exhibitors have fallen by the wayside. Some changed from steam and electric to gasoline power. Some of them changed their names and their owners or moved from one city to an- other. Another Interesting fact is that inton cars won every race in which they started at the show .and estab- | lished a long string of records that stqod for several years. “This is a record of pioneership without parallel. . . Willtam R. Ditworth's automobile has set the pace for motor cars in the Goldfleld, Nevada, mining district. It has been in daily service since April 5, 1906, and has covered a total of 15,620 miles. In appearance Newman has some- thing of the seer cast of countenance. His red beard is unkempt and scragsy, like Bernard Shaw’s, his voice is high- pitched, his style lucid and brief, his humor, unlike that of his playwright double, absolutely unconscious. Judge Weller appointed Attorney F¥ |4l G. Drury to defend the man, and after Buhne had told his version of the as- sault, which occurred on February 23 in Newman's little green cottage, the defendant was placed on the stand. His deafness mnde him invulnerable to interruptions. “I went home that night. I found four men In the house, drinking with my wife, and they were all tipsy. I ordered them out, but they would not 80, and I get a policeman. I want to be home with my family one night, but it is no use. The policeman make some of the men go, but this man Buhne stay. Then I order him to leave, but he takes his fist and hit me on the cheek, a glancing blow, like this.” The witness punctuated his talk with ges- tures, ample and illustrative. “I see a hatchet on the ground and I take this end, not the sharp end, and I tap him, then I tap him a little harder and he sit down and the bleed come. Attorney Drury pleaded “unwrit- ten law” and defense of home as miti- gating circumstances of the - “taps” with the hatchet, and the Police Judge released Newman, who léft the court- room with a lordly air, his Bernard Shaw beard bristling.
