MM[ THIEF MAY GET TEN YEARS Ten years in the penitentiary 1s the fate that confronts Robert Wallace Nel- son, an expressman, who was caught stealing packages of mall from the postoffice in Santa Cruz on December 25.- He pleaded guiily before Judge to the indictment | charging ten larcenies in as many | counts. He was ordered to appear for | sentence today. The lowest penalty that may be im- | posed is one year's imprisonment on | each count. Nelson was not repre- | sented by an attorney and apparently was ignorant of the full consequences of his plea of guilty. Two years ago Emil Kanngieser, a | postoffice clerk, was caught stealing | from the mail and was indicted on | elght counts. Congressman Kahn was | his attorney and when Kanngieser ap- | peared for sentence on his plea of | guilty Kahn made a fervent appeal for clemency. The first stranger then decamped. e FILLMORE STREET TO BE EXTENSIVELY IMPROVED Plans Being Made for Decorative Light- ing System and Repaving of the Thoroughfare Belleving that Flllmore street as a shopping thoroughfare has come to | stay, the Fillmore-street Improvement has subscribed for about | 850,000 of city bonds and thus has in- sured repaving of the street and a new lighting system. Work will begin at once, according to the statement of J. W. Raphael, vice president of the as- sociation. He declares that the association has experts and engineers at work to as- certain the cost of a system of orna- mental street lights, for which an ap- propriation has been secured. ‘‘We have the assurance of the city officials that work will be begun at once, and that about $25,000 will be expended in the work of repaving the street,” said the merchant.
