ASHINGTON, Aug 17— Army orders — First Lieutenant George Dun- can, Fourteenth Cavalry, will Proceed to San Francisco and report to the commanding offi- { ~cer, General Hospital, Presidio, San Francisco, for treatment. Contract Surgeon Edward H. Jordon will proceed from Den- ver, Colo, to Sam Franeisco,- take the transport September 5 for Manila and report to the commanding general of the- Philippines Division for duty. ERANEY WY LOSE {5 SMITHY. Tn all likelihood E. M. Graney will be compelled to give up his possession of a wooden building which he has been using for his horseshoeing shop since the fire, or else pay rental to the city for the same. The bullding for- merly stood at the foot of Van Ness avenue in the middle of the roadway, and was afterward removed to the public library s.ie, farther up the street, where it now stands. At yesterday’s meeting of the Fire Commissioners a letter was read from the citizens’ finance committee calling attention to the fact that the building had been erected for the use of the San Francisco Fire Departmént on the or- der of J. A. Denéen of the citizens committee. The sum of $494 was paid to Victor Hoffman for its erection, and the committee said it should be the property of no one but the city. The Fire Commissioners ordered a copy of the letter sent to the Board of Supervisors and also to Graney, as a gentle hint to him to vacate or pay a rental to the city for the use of the building. In order to provide better fire pro- tection for the new retail district, at the request of the Van Ness Avenue Retailers’ Association the corhmission decided to ask the Olympic Salt Water Company to set thirteen double hy- drants on its twelve-inch main on Geary street at designated crossings from Polk to Devisadero streets. The commission will also request the Spring Valley Water Company to lay a twelve-inch main on Sacramento street from Franklin to Larkin and to con- nect eight hydrants. The commission ordered a relief en- gine sent to Woodland, which lost one of its own in the San Francisco fire and another by an explosion. The battalion chiefs and Chief Shaughnessy. will constitute a special board of examiners to assist the Clvil Service Commission in establishing proper records for meritorious service of the applicants for promotion from fireman to lieutenant. The commissign submitted to the re- lief committee a list of thirty firemen now on leaves of absence who will be employed as policéman at the various refugee camps. The resignation of Truckman T. P. Duffy was accepted. ¥: The contract for furnishing hydrants to the department was awarded to the Fulton Iron Works at $352.45 each. Merrick & Stacy secured the contract for various kinds of ladders. The Commissioners will acknowledge the receipt of $550 from 'the Fire De- partment of Portland, Me., for the re- lief of local firemen. snmm‘v"mms FIRE CISTERNS: Citizens of this city have brought to the attention of the Grand Jury the necessity of having an Independent water system for fire fighting. The matter was brought up before the hody at -its meeting yesterday by Luther Wagoner, and after a thorough discus- sion it was decided to place the matter before the Board of Supervisors. The following letter was sent to the board: The Grand Jury respectfully in- vites vour consideration of the matter of cailing a special election for the purpose of issuing bonds for installing an improved system of fire protection. ‘Without entering into detalls broadly, the -scheme would be to construct res- ervoirs upon all avallable summits, connected by pipe in tunnels and sup- plemented by cisterns where needed. The conditions now are such that-a large amount of dangerously inflam- mable bufldings menace the city with a constant fire hazzard, causing a pro- hibitive insurance rate and aldogdis- couraging rebuilding. The work outlined above can be dona at once. It in no way depends upon a new water supply, and we belleve if carried out promptly will prove of in- estimable value to our city. Next Monday evening the' fire com- mittee of the Grand Jury will meet Chief Shaughnessy at 2105 Pine. street and discuss the feasibility of installing an lnd%f{:em water system along with th ‘esent system. John cElroy suggested that the relief committee purchase a tract of timber land and manufacture its own lumber at a price which, he believes, would be mulh less than what the market is now charging. The matter will be referred to the relief committee. Charles Hendry of the' London and | 2000 Lancashire Insurance Company was again before the body. He admitted that he did not know the names of the foreign insurance companies with which his company was reinsured. - He gave the names of American insurance companies which carried reinsurance of the London and Lancashire Colmpany, but he said they had met their losse fairly. He was ordered to be present at the next meeting of the body with the names of the foreign companies. Messrs. Redfield and Clifford complain that in all of the country they traxeled over there is only one signboard to point the way at crossroads. They saw much rich-looking ground during their trip that has never been:gone over in search’ of mineral. At Seven Troughs, 2 new camp thirty-five miles from Lovelocks, many men are at work, and the prospectors have brought back with them samples filled with free gold which they say came from the camp. | It is reported that at least 200 men are | Wworking in and about the camp, but, this the prospectors will not vouch for, | although they say the camp has drawn | many Goldfield and Tonopah men. Installs New Compressor. TONOPAH, Aug. 17.—The Tonopah Mining" Company, the big mine of ths camp, has received a new compressor | The machine is what is known as a| thirteen-drill affair, and the superin-| tendent calculates to make great head- way with the taking out of ore when| the new plant is installed. 131 51 Districts.« —|Kawich Gold..
