Henry ]J. a)cker Tells * of the Success Attend- ing His Trip to Japan CLOSES BIG DEAL Henry J. Crocker returned yesterday from the Orient, and as a yesult of his visit to Japan a new line of tank steamers will soon be running between here and the Far East and the market for California oil will be wider by an annual output of at least 500,000 gal- lons. The new steamers will be not less than 6000 tons each and there will be ten of them. Crocker signed the contracts for the oil before he left Japan and he must have the steamers to deliver it, This new customer who orders the California product on such lavish scale is the Toyo Kisen Kaisha, the Japan- ese company that owns the three “Ma- ru” liners that run to this.port. Crocker left here about three months ago with W. L. Stewart and W. S. Porter. They represented different Callfornia oil interests and each went to the Orient for the purpose of secur- ing the big contract for his own com- pany. Crocker won. The contract is an enormous orte, however, and Crocker said yesterday that the companies rep- resented by Porter and Stewart and probably other California gompanies would share with his own the benefits of the big deal. Crocker, who is interested in the California Petroleum Refining Com- pany, Limited, and the Graciosa OIll Company, was highly elated vesterday at the success of his mission and fairly beamed as he told what a delighttul time he had in Japan. “There is no market in Japan,” he said, “for refined oil. Japan has her own refineries, and her protective tariff, which amounts to about 9 cents a gallon, is prohibitive. The duty on the crude product is 20 per cent ad valorem. That's for revenue, and it is all right, as Japan has no oil of her own. “Our dontract with the Toyo Kluen Kaisha calls for more than 500,000 gallons a year, and to get this to Japan we will buy or build about ten tank steamers of about 6000 tons each. Our steamers will load their oil at Port Harford and will discharge their return cargoes here or wherever will be most profitable.” , Crocker was acgompanied on his trip to Japan by his wife and five children, who_returned with him yesterday on the Hongkong Maru. —— REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS. W.H. Avcr;fs Showered WithAttentions During iRecent Voyage to Japan TREATED TO BEST W. H. Avery, general manager in this city for the Toyo Kisen Kaisha, who returned yesterday from Japan on the liner Hongkong Maru, owes to Califor- nia oil an experience common to pretty girls, but one that rarely falls to the lot on any mere man. He left here on the steamer Doric. He had been ordered to Japan to give his principals the benefit of his advice in| the leiting of a big fuel ofl contract. | Passengers with him on the Doric were Henry J: Crocker, W. L. Stewart and W. S. Porter, all representing large Call- fornia oil interests and each determined | to secure the contract. The people on the Doric say that only | when asleep was Avery alone. At least two of the three oil men were In attend- ance upon him constantly. They did not talk oil all the time. If Avery seemed uneasy in his steam- er chair he had the choice of three other rattan lounging devices. If he shivered, or seemed to, three steamer rugs were draped carefully across his knees. For the alleviation of his thirst there were three separate and distinct pre- scriptions, and, as for smoking, Avery never knew before what really fine ci- gars were made in Havana. ‘Would he read? An avalanche of the Mmost expensive current literature Showered from three directions, and when he walked it was “fours deep.” It was the same in Yokohama. Avery appeared on the street and as if by magic three jinrickshaws were offered for his easier transportation and three umbrellas defled the sun to brown the ger's countenance. Avery smiled yesterday when asked about his convoy of eminent oil men, but declined to discuss his experience beyond saying: “You have heard about playing both ends against the middle” Well, I was Fhe middle.” RSy S S ALLEGED FRESNO EMBEZZLER ARRESTED IN SAN RAFAEL SAN RAFAEL Aug. 13.—Leon M.
