Instead of a warring quartet, however, it contalned a tranquil trio, all of | whom affected surprise at being ac- costed. At the station they were | registered as Al Brewer of Berkeley Albert Crittner, dentist, 1001A Guer- rero street, and Frank Tallaferro, oc- cupation not given, of 2836 Sixteenth street. At first they professed igno- rance of any shooting, but threat o detentlon until the mystery was cleared elicited information that im- mediately sent the two policemen to & | “shack” at the ocean beach, where they found Lewis Hirsch, dentist, alone, abed and asleep, with a revolver nestling under his pillow. One cham- ber of the weapon contained an empty sh fly! flrln T fired e shot,” drowsily confessed the recumbent suspect, “but I didn't aim to hurt anybody. We'd been drink- ing some, you see, and when we got out here I felt sleepy and wanted to | go to bed, but the others wouldn't| have it, and just for fun I drew my| pistol and fired in the air.” { He, too, was detained, and when | Captain Gleason reported the case to‘ his chief he was instructed to book‘ Dr. Hirsch on a charge of peace dis- | turbance and release the others. Captain George W. Brown of the City of Para obtained something hotter than cold comfort as the result of his appeal t» United States Supervising Inspector John Bermingham from the judgment of Local Inspectors Molles and Bulges suspending his license for ninety days for running his vessel upon a shoal near Point Ano Nuevo on July 10. Captain Bermingham denied the ap- peal and read Captain Brown a severe lecture. 'The supervising inspector said that Captain Brown should have taken soundings “half an hour before he rubbed sides with the rocks of Point Ano Nuevo, but it is the old and oft- repeated story: ‘The mate was just getting the sounding machine ready when she touched bottom.” ™ Captain Bermingham continued by re- verting to the loss of the Pacific Mail steamship Colombia July 13, 1896, ten years previous almost to a day, near Pigeon Point, five miles northwest of Point Ano Nuevo, and added that that Gigsaster should suffice as a warning for all time for navigators to obtain sound- ings In that vicinity after crossing Monterey Bay in a fog. If the necessary funds are forthcoming it will be ready for traffic in a short time. —_— | PROPERTY OWNERS WROTH AT THE UNITED RAILROADS Halght Strect Residents Say Corpora- tion Has Toru Up Tracks and Mutilated the Street. The members of the Haight Street Improvement Club gathered at an in- dignation meeting last night to protest against the action of the United Rail- roads in tearing up their street near the park. They claim the corporation has made no attempt to clean the street and unless something is done in a hurry they propose to invoke the aid of the law. Some weeks ago, according to the members of the club, the United Rail- roads began tearing up its tracks on Haight street, between Baker and Stanyan. For some reason or another this work was abandoned, even before the strike of the laborers, and since hen, according to the property owners, the rocks, debris and rubblish has been left on the sidewalks. In their resolutions adopted last night, the property owners favor the stand taken by the workmen in their demand for more wages. The citizens are of the opinion that these men can- not support themselves on their pres- ent earnings and belleve the United Railroads should accede to their de- mands. After the indignation meeting, the members of the club discussed ways and means for lighting and improving other ways. Business is brisk in that section of the city and the merchants are about to form an association to beautify the street and improve facili- | ties so that the shoppers will not long | for the downtown hou: —_— Skating Rink Company.
