EL PASO, June 4.—Senor Francisee Mallen, Mexican Consul at Bl Paso, gave the following statement tonight: Only seven Mexicans and two Ameri- cans were killed at Cananea. The Mexican officials are now in absolute control and So_quiet is the situatiom | that Governor Ysabel returned to }moculo today, leaving General Torres |and Colonel Kosterlitzky in command. The Mexican Government will not cen= sure Governor Ysabel for taking armed Americans to Cananea, as they were not American soidiers and it was time for action. Men were needed in Cananea to restore peace and the Americans vol- | unteered. Governor Ysabel accepted them pending the arrival of Mexican troops. The trouble at Naco between Americans and the Mexican officers Fri- day night was due to a mistake of somel ¥y and is deplorable, but I am satisfled that'it is ended. There was no organized attempt. as you know, of armed men to force themselves into Mexico. I think the incident is a closed one. The troops seant from Chiliuahua last Saturday are still camped in Ciudad Juarez and will not go o Cananea, al- though having permission to pass through the United States. Lewis, consulting engineer of the Pennsylva- nia and Cananea Copper Company, an adjoining property of the Greene Cop- per Company, at Cananea, returned here from the latter place today., bav= ing left there last Friday. He says the whole trouble at Cananea was caused by agitators from the City of Mexico, who distributed pamphlets headed “Mexico for Mexicans,” and set« |ting forth that the Government was | turning the country over to Americans |and other foreigners, and calling wpom the natives to rise and expel all for- eigners. A Qissatisfaction, growiag out of the difference in wages pald to American and Mexican miners, had also to do with the uprising. Lewis said that the authorities have the situation well in hand.
