SONVILLE, May 27.—The semi- tenary Church of the Immacu- Heart, the first Cathelic church in was celebrated today. Al- weather was stormy, there a attendance of worshipers at services, ‘which included a pontifical s celebrated by Bishop Conaty administering of the sacrament tion to several candidates. Low- enberg and hosts of other equally geod clubwomen. But there’s millions of things yet to be done, and trained minds can do them best. The most effective relief work of any club has been that done by the relief com- mittee of the California Club, with its hegdquarters at the A. W. Scott home, 305 Buchanan street The Century Club, having had the fore- sight to buy and build on the other side of the fire line, is the only club in town that isn't a refugee. The only other club that owned its home was the California, at 1750 Clay street, just a wee block from the saved district. While hitting the California Club mem- bers pretty hard, things might have been worse, as a goodly bit of the club's fur- nishings had been rescued before the flames licked up the beautiful home— to Avylett R. Cotton and a few other willing hands. The Century Club having very wisely and generously surrendered its home to the Superior Court has established its headquarters in the home of Mrs. Fred- erick A. Woods at California and Octavia streets, the ballroom therein having been placed at the club's disposal. . ia The Pacific Coast Women’s Press As- sociation will meet at the home of Mr: Charles James Newman, 1700 Broadwa: today at 2:30. And every good press a sociation member sheuld put in appear- ance, as there is much to discuss of in- terest and impertance. Take the Fillmore car. The Sorosis Club will meet today at the home of Mrs. Wenzelburger, on Steiner street. Directory up in smoke and I can't recall the number. Members are invited to come equipped with thimbles and other feminine para- phernalia for emergency sewing. The Association of Pioneer Women of California—to whom conditions of the hour must 1l the days they commem- orate in their unique organization—will meet on Friday afternoon at 10 Bartlett street Every member is urged to be present. s OLDIER BOYS GNEN GREBIT of at er Sherman, Son the Famous General, Extols Heroes. Delivers a Patriotic Ser- mon at Sacred Heart Church. Rev. Father Thomas E. Sherman, S. J., of Chicago, son of the late Gen- eral W. T. Sherman, and a native son of San Francisco, having been born on Harrison street in 1856, preached a memorfal sermon last night at Sa- cred Heart Church, his theme being “The Soldiers of the Spanish-Ameri- can War,” in which he served as chaplain of the Fourth Missouri Vol- unteers. Father Sherman was sent to Porto Rico by the Secretary of War, and there saw service similar to those of his comrades of the First California Volunteers, the regiment with which Father McQuaide served. Father McQuaide, chaplain of the First Infantry, N. G. C, and State chaplain of the Spanish-American War Veterans, was present at the ser- vice and wore the uniform of a chap- lain. The band of the regiment of infantry, N. G. C., under direction of Bandmaster Hollister, was in at- tendance and dlscoursed sacred mu- sic, beginning with ‘‘Providence,” ar- ranged by Theodore Mogses-Tobani. Father Sherman’s allusion to the great bravery of the American sol- dier at time of war was the preface to his high compliment and apprecia- tion of the splendid work of the sol- diers in San Francisco since the dis- aster. It was work and obedience to duty which had won universal admi- ration as well as the deep confidence of the stricken citizens. This had been a sad home coming for him, for he had but a few months ago seen San Francisco in all her glory, but, like Rome, which had arisen in might and splendor time and time again, this city, he predicted, would rise glorieusly from her ashes. Father Sherman congratulated the people on the wonderful order which had prevailed from the very moment of the calamity—an order which had surprised and won the admiration of the world. The celebrant of the mass was Father Thomas Commerford, assisted by Father W. A. Fleming as deacon and Father Cleary as subdeacon. B — Sheerin’s Laundry, 760 McAllister st. Phone Park 316.
