P. SCHWERIN ELECTED FIRST PRESIDENT OF CLUB 8hi Board the Chartered Steamer H. J. Corcoran. R. P. Schwerin is a jolly tar. If you told this on the Pacific Mail whart no- body would beliéeve you, but it is true Jjust the same. He is more than a mere Jolly tar. Jolly Tars. He has been elected on board the river steamer J. Corcoran. The Corcoran has been chartered by the prominent shipping men of the port as a clubhouse. The members or- ganized yesterday as the Jolly Tars Club and enjoyed their first luncheon on board. R. P. Schwerin, general manager of the Pacific Mail Company, was elected president, and Harry Scott of the Barneson-Hibbard Company vice president. The other officers will Dbe elected today. The Jolly Tars are taking an active part in rebuilding San Francisco. Thelr work is to hold together the trade of the port and keep the city by the Golden Gate on her commercial pedes- tal. Time 18 too precious now for shipping men to go to their homes for the midday meal, and the present life is so strenuous that the midday meal is more than ever before a necessity. The ante-fire water front restaurants are not particularly inviting, so the shipping men decided to have a grill- roo mof their own. They chartered the Corcoran and en- gaged a chef and staff of attendants. They secured a berth for their floating clubhouse adjoining the ferry depot, and yesterday the Jolly Tars Club was organized with 100 chartered members. The initiation fee is $5 and the dues $2.50 a month. The club’s motto is “Cheer up.” Twenty-eight staterooms have been | fitted up for the use of members. | ASSESSOR MAKES COPIES OF REALTY VALUATIONS | Dodge WIll Tend to “Self-Appralse- { ments Made by Property Owners that Ralsed Rents. Assessor Dodge has set twenty-eight of his clerks at work making coples of the valuations of all real estate in the city from the tax books in the tax collector's office of last year. ‘When this work is completed Assessor | Dodge will fix the values of all realty in the burned district, and those of the “gelf-appraised” real estate in the West- i ern Addition. This will be done especlal- 1y in and about the vicinity of Filimore street, where owners are regarding square inches as so much gold coin and vacant houses as though they were gold mines In the cellars, to be explored by the tenants. Assessor Dodge iIntends to give fair play to these property owners that did not attempt to take an undue advantage of the misfortunes of the fire sufferers. —_—— e WILL AID SMALL INSURERS WHO LOST THEIR POLICIES Commissioner Wolf Hits Upon Plan to Obtain Information As To Location of Property. With a view to aiding the small insurer, who lost not only his property but his policy as well, Insurance Commissioner E. Myron Wolf has hit upon a plan that will be welcomed by many sufferers. Wolf has arranged a form which is to be filled out by those that have lost their policies, con- taining such information as will enable him to file not only notice of loss, but proof thereof as well. The form follows: Name in which policy was written. Present address. Localion of property insured. Character of property insured. Name of person who negotlated in- surance. After the blanks have been filled out, they are to be malled or taken to In- surance Commissioner Wolf, who has offices at 1940 Fillmore street. Stolen Harness Recovered. Detective Ryan recovered a quantity of harness, buggy robes and whips In a house on Presidlo avenue and took them to the property clerk at the Lowell High School. They had been taken from the shop of the Leibold Har- mness Company, 211 Larkin street. The 3900 worth of harness recovered by Ryan several days ago from the conservatory of Dr. F. W. Vonsuckel, 903 Van Ness avenue, where it«dhad been put by boys, had also been taken from the same shop. B N A Involuntary Bankrupt. The Ramsey Alton Manufacturing Company, the Western Transfer and Storage Company and Reed, Black & Reed, creditors, have filled a ‘petition in the United States Dlltrlct Court asking that the San Francisco Furni- ture Company, Inc., be declared an In- voluntary bankrupt.
