Osbourne sald yesterday that there was little destitution now in the actor colony. Most of those in distress have been cared for already. “The best evidence of this,” he said, “is that we have used only $35 of this money so far. It would have been better, I think, if it had been turned into the general relief fund. But the people who gave it want it distributed this way and what they say goes.” Since the earthquake Osbotrne has become an exp~rt outdoor stéve bulld- er. He has installed brick ranges for many of his neighbors. All Who have benefited as the result of his mechan- ical skill insist on the actor-bullder being their guest whenever they have real food to eat, Osbourne sald yes- terday. “I am becoming an inveterate diner- out. The firm has several desirable bullding sites in San Fran- cisco under consideration, and as soon as a selection is made an army of me- chanics will be employed to erect thereon a modern steel structure, twelve stories high, to become the permanent San Francisco home of this enterprising company. It ig the inten- tion of the firm to continue the occu- pancy of the new Oakiand home it is building, and thus it will be provided with mammoth stores in Oakland and San Francisco. e ————— Rain Damages the Crops. FRESNO, May 12.—Half an inch of rain that fell here has done consider- able damage to the wheat and barley crops. There is an unusually heavy crop of these cereals thig year and the downpour has beaten out the heads of the grain. Cut hay in the fields was also damaged. The bloom was knocked off the grape vines and will cause a diminu- tion of the raisin crop. T IR a R Democrats to Assemble. The State |needs additional population just as it did before the late unpleasantness, and it is Fee's opinion that while tem- porarily they may -not find San Fran- cisco an agreeable stopping-place, yet there is absolutely no reason why they should not come to California on the usual pleasure trips or to create new homes, and so far as business is con- cerned, take advantage of the great- est opportunities. in that line that have ever been offered. —— O ——— M G-TB S Sequoia Club Meeting.
