City Engineer Asserts Gray Brothers Lowered Beacon Street by Over Forty Feet BLAS'I‘IN G MUST CEASE Woodward Says Fn'm Has Been Granted No Permit to Undermine Official® Level City Engineer Woodward yesterday made an inspection of the quarrying now being done by Gray Bros. on Bea- con street, between Castra and Dia- mond, -against which property owners have protested on the ground that the blasting is a menace to life and prop- erty. ‘Woodward ascertained that Beacon street,’ between _the streets named, is being, cut down by more than forty feet below what would be the official grade | of ‘the street, If ft were so declared. While no official. grade has as yet been fixed, Woodward judges that the exca- vation is far below the grade, taking the grades of Castro and Diamond street§ as a standard. Woodward says that the "permit granted to Gray Bros. reads that they shall have the right to grade for credits in ‘front of. thelr own property’to the offieial grade. Gray Brosiclalm-that as no; official grade-~has been" enflflshed they are at liberty to quarry down as far as they like. Woogward disagrees with the firm on that ppint and will re- port his findings to the Board of Works with a recommendation that the fur- ther cutting down of the street cease. In rettrn for the cutting down of Beacon street :-below . its”lavel Gray Bros. want to donate a-strip-of land twenty feet in width, running from Thirtieth to . Thirty-first = 'stseet, be- tween Castro and Diamond streets, but it is not thought tHat this will remedy the matter.. The property owners and residents. in the vicinity are indignant over what they term the wanton cut- ting down of the street. The City En- gineer is preparing cross sections of the territory affected and will make a preliminary survey to determine just how far below the surface of the street Last This Last Statlons— 24 hours. Figures Cost of Improvement. The Board of Public Works yesterday ascertained that the cost of bituminiz- ing Point Lobos avenue, from Présidio avenue to Thirty-third avenue, will ag- gregate $135,000. The Point Lobos Improvement Club’ has asked the board to request of the Supervisors an appropriation. for at leastspart of the work. It is claimed that the city should bear the expense just as it has done in the bituminizing of Mission street. The board will file its estimate of appropriations required for the next fiscal year on next Mon- day and will probably incorporate an item for the bituminizing of Point Lobos avenue and it will be.for the the improvement shall be carried out. —_———————— Oregon Souvenirs Stopped, Customs Collector Stratton was.noti- fied yesterday that Surveyor of Cus- toms Woodward had intercepted at Ba- kersfield sixty large and valuable pack- ages in transit from the battleship Ore- gon to persons in the East.
