Timbrel, strest; 120 N from N SCHOOL CENSUS WILL BE TAKEN ON MONDAY Deputies Will Co-operate in Plan to Inerease Daily At- tendance of Pupils. —_— Chief Census Marshal Beckett yes- terday called his seventy deputies to- gether at the City Hall and instructed them as to thelr dutles in connection with the taking of the school census. The work of taking the census will be- gin next Monday and Beckett desires that his suberdinates be given all the information relative to the number of children of school age in each house- hold. In the past considerable trouble has been experlenced with some par- ents who do not want to answer the questions on the subject. : It is desired to Increase the attend- ance of puplls in the public schools. as the income from the State for support of the schools is based thereon. Beckett explained to his men that as a side is- sue to their regular duties they were to get Information relative to some 17,000 children who do not attend school and who under the child labor law are prohibited from working if they are under the age of fourteen. Beckett told his deputies to co-operate with the truant officers in the location of such children, in accordance with a plan agreed upon by Superintendent of Schools Roncovieri and the Board of Education, to which publicity was gslven two weeks ago. Roncovier! and R. D. Faulkner, prin- cipal of the Parental School, addressed the deputy census marshals on the mat- ter and urged them to use the best ef- forts to locate all children who should be attending school. The name of any chlld of school age who does not attend school will'be noted on a card printed for the purpose, together with its age, address and other information. The truant officers will then proceed to| compel the attendance of all such chil- dren. Beckett says it is not expected that the entire 17,000 children described will be forced to attend school, as some of them may be sick, or belong to the floating population. A strong endeavor, however, will be made to increase the daily attendance by at least half that number by the mea: mentioned. —_ 0 % Thirteenth, 8 25 by W 100, Jot 16 and portion Jot u,. block 176, Kellersberger's map, Oak- and Edward L, Braswell to Henry ot on W Tine of Brosaway o0 N Buena Vista avenue, N 38:4 by W 100, mn lot 2, plat Pancoast Tract, Alameda; Allyn J. The room was | ransacked and about $0 in gold and greenbacks stolen. Carlson was awakened about 6 o'clock by a rapping on his door. He opened it and was confronted by two masked men, each presenting a revolver at his head. They made him throw up his hands and one of them struck him with the butt end of a revolver on the head and fore- head, knocking him unconsolous. Miss L. J. Martin, who occuples a room opposite Carlson’s, heard cries for help coming from Carison's room, and she touched an electric button to attract the attention of Richard Morris, the night clerk. Bhe continued the operation for | about ten or fiften minutes before Morris | appeared. Morris entered Carlson's room | and found him lying under the bed with his hands and feet tled with cotton cords. Morris dragged Carlson from under the bed and cut the cords. Blood was flow- ing from wounds on Carison’'s head and forehead and there was a pool of bloed | under the bed. | Instead of notifying the police Morris rang for the ambulance from the Central PEmergeacy Hospital. When the ambu- | lance arrived the driver told Policeman Hurd that some one was injure®at 32 Mason street, and Hurd went there. After making an investigation he . tele- phoned to police headquarters and De- tective Ryan responded. He and Hurd discovered that Carlson’s room had been thoroughly ransacked d the lining of his coat and trousers had been cut open. They also found a mask that had been ‘worn by one of the robbers. Carlson later in the day partly recov- ered consclousness at the Central Emerg- ency Hospital, and said that he had $450 in gold and currency in the room. The gold had been under his mattress and the currency sewed under the lining of his trousers. He had also a gold watch. The coin was gone, but the officers found the watch under a book. The police have come to the conclusion that the robbers were familiar with Carl- son's habits, from the fact that they cut the lining of his coat and trousers in search of coin. No one could be found who had seen them, which places the po- lice at a disadvantage. Carlson was removed to the Walton Hotel, 432 Ellis street, in the afternoon. There he was registered as Harry Adams, & traveling man, and through the friends that guarded his door he announced that he had been hurt in an automobile acci- dent in the park. The police belleve that he is trying to shield the robbers for rea- sons of his own. —_—— JEWISH INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HOLDS OPEN MEETING Rabbis Voorsanger and Nieto Talk Elo- quently on the Desires of . the Soclety.
