Tuesday’ evering, long after the baby had been laid in its cradle and the house had become quiet, the youug couple felt the prey of a strange restlessness that prevented them from retiring. The even- ing wore on, midnight came and still the - 2 | singular sleeplessness was upon them. At 2 | 1ast, at 1 o'clock in the morning, they sud- 30 | denly realized the ecause of their condi- 30 | tion. The houseé was full of smoke. Mont- gomery traced it tothe cellar deor, and descending into the basement found a re- spectable bonfire crackling in the middle of the floor. It was the unlucky blankets which were again ablaze. Attaching a hose to a nearby faucet, by playing fire- 31 | man for a few minutes Montgomery put 1 | out the flames, which were already eating into the ‘wooden walls. The Montgomerys have been married a little over a year. The husband is em- ployed in the Immigration Bureau, but he is, moreover, a writer of gift. Mrs. Mont- gomery was Miss Lurline Lyons hefore her marriage and is cousin to Charmion Kittredge, who is now the wifs of Jack London, the writer. She is remarkably beautiful. SUBSIDIZE SHIPS Australian Parliamentarian Says United States Must Help Steamship Companies OTHER COUNTRIES Bonuses Given by European and Japanese Governments - Make Competition Ruinous DO Daniel O'Connor of Sydney, New South ‘Wales, member of the Australfn Parlia- ment for thirty-one years and twice Cab- inet Minister, thinks the United States should subsidize its steamship companies. All of the lines running to Australia, he Eays, are subsidized by the governments of Great Britain, France, Germany and Japan. Even the little commonwealth of New Zealand manages to give 350,000 a year to a company running from there to Canada, and in order to compete success- fully the American lines must also be helped. ‘When seen vesterday Mr. O'Connor made the following statement of his convic- tions: From my connection with the Parllament of my adopted country for a period of thirty- one years, as a member of both houses of the Legislature and as a ‘Cabinet Minister on two occgsions, 1 may be presumcd to have a good ledge of all public welfare of Australasia. 1t was from experience gained in public and commercial iife that I ventured to offer, my interview on my arrival here two months ago, my strong advice to the governmental authorities of the United States to place thelr steamship owners on terms of absolute trading equality, with the owners of the lines of steam- ers trading to Australia that are largely, and in my opinion most properly, subsidized by the governments of Great Britain and Irejand, as well as by France, Germany and Japan. In jooking over the files of Australian news- papers that arrived by the Sierra on Monday last 1 found in the Sydney Daily Telegraph (one of the leading newspapers of Australasia) of the 20th of February, under the heading “New Vancouver Service,” particulars regard- ing direct steamship service which has been arranged to connect Vancouver d New Zea- land. It appears that a confract had then beer signed at Ottawa, the Minisier of Trade and Commerce acting for Canada, ‘and R. A. Alley for the Bucknall - steamship lines of London, which is to supply the steamers, THINK BOATS TOO SLOW. " It is understood that Vancouver business circles_have indulged in criticlsm of the fact that the boats are only to make ten knots an hour. The subsicy of £20,000 a year (that is $100,000) is to be divided equally between Canada and New Zealand. According to a Vancouver correspondent there will be six sallings from each end every year under the arrangement. It Is stated that the Dominion Government of Canada is anxious to increase trade relations with New Zealand as much as possible, and it has been decided to have a oreditable display fllustrative of the natural resources and agrioultural capabilities of Can- ada at the international exposition to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand, in November next and the following months. The first steamer under this subsidy Is to arrive in New Zeaiapd this month of March. May 1 ng! say to the great United States of America, with more than elghty millions of ‘a popuiation, that if the statesmen of New Zealand, which has only a population of just over eight hundred thousand, can see their way clear, on commercial lines, to give a subeidy from that colony's tréasury of £10,000 a year ($50,000), surely the Govern- ment of the United States, with its inex- haustible resources, should give the proper sutsidy to the Oceanic Steamship Company, Which company runs; ésisteamers. every. three weeks from ‘SanrFrancisco ito Honoluly, Fago Pago, Samon (American dependencies), und then on to Auckland, New Zealand, and to Sydney, Australia. HEARS OF LOSSES. -1 have heard since my arrival m San Fran- cleco that the Oceanic Steamship Company ‘has besn ruhning its steamers between Amer- ica and Australia at a great loss. That cer- tainly should not be so.. If the Oceanic Com- pany ceased running its steamships to Aus- tralis, it would mean in many respects u great loss to the Australian people. I should indeed be sorry to hear of the withdrawal of the steamers now trading. No one except those who like myself, have traveled ean give any idea of the comfort and the pleasure of the pussage from the Antipodes to San Francisco. It is indeed only a pleasure tv four days from Sydney to Auckland: fiv to Pago Pago (a South Sea paradise); six days to Honolulu (a place impossible to describe), and then abont six days to San Francisco, and rarely a rough day from start to finish of the voyage. It would be a great jury to trade and an inconvenience to Australasians and Americans who desire to go through America or Australia on their Way to or from Europe, as well as to the mall service gen- erally, it the Oceanic Company decided to cease running its steamers. Tt is not generally known by the public of cither America or Australasia that passengers from_ Australia to England or Europe arrive by the Oceanic Company eleven days earlier then they would from Australie to England or Eurcoe by way of the Red Sea, the route of all mail steamers excepting the Vancouver line. 1f passengers were encouraged to come from Australla by wey of San Francisco, very large sums per annum would be expended by them In passing through America, a direct benefit to the American people mot to be de- spised. P personally, T have no interest whatéver the matter. 1 merely pérform what I be- lleve to be a duty on my part in calling pub- iie attention to the matter. I mersly suggest that Congross do its part for the undoubtediy ultimate benefit of the peaple of America, in adopting my just recommendation VALUABLE JEWELRY .
