Nine men were brought up for the vessel yesterday from 8an Francisco by the steamship Roanoke, Shortly after their arrival here the men were placed | aboard a launch and taken down the | bay to where the Langdale lay at an- chor. After a brief investigation they refused to hoard the vessel. The men spent the remainder of tite night in the county jail, and this after- noon were arraigned before United States Commissioner Ford. They claim that they were shipped under gross misrépresentation, having been told that they were going to Aus- tralia in a steamship instead of Peru in a sailing vessel. LOS ANGELES, March 26.—The Los geles City Council today granted a franchise which Is believed to be covertly for the use of Gould's Western Pacific for terminal facilities in Los Angeles. E. W. Gilmore of the street contracting firm of Falirchild, Gilmore & Wilton, in whose name the franchise was granted, denies that it is for such a purpose, but notwithstanding many believe it is really the initial move of the Gould Interests to secure an entrance into this city. LONDON, March 26.—Considerable un- easiness has been caused throughout England by attempts to leep secret King | Edward's condition. His Majesty's left knee has peen troubling him a great deal | the last few months and his trip to the | south of France was really ordered for him by Sir PFrederick Treves, his physi- clan. Qn account of the King’s diplo- macy in going to the Riveria for political reasons and his visit to the new French President and the King of Spain, the | public has been thrown off the scent as regards his physical infirmities. Dr. Treves and one or two other ex- pert surgeons whom King Edward called to a consultation said that another opera- tion on the King's knee was absolutely necessary. The King, last autumn, at varieus shooting parties at which he was the leader, either shot sitting down in an | automobile or in a pony carriage. What | walking he had to do during the winter was done with the aid of a stick and at state functions, both in Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, he was forced | to use a stout cane In order to get around. I The trouble is one_ of several years' | duration. While on’a visit to Lord Rothschild's estate in Buckinghamshire | when he was Prince of Wales, the King, after a_somewhat hilarious evening, slip- ped on the highly polished marble stairs and fell down the whole flight of the grand staircase. His knee cap was frac- tured so badly that the surgeons found it impossible to set it properly and were forced to use a large quantity of silver wire: So, practically, the King has been going around for a long tlme with his left leg joined together at the knee with | silver hinges. The King has been a very active man in recent years and has given himseif very little rest. In consequencd the silver hinges of his leg have been so much worn that one or two of them recently | gave way and it has been found necessary | to open up the knee again and insert |1 more silver wire, I These facts have been kept so secret that only a few persons in the royal and inner circles of soclety and the medical profession know anything about the true situation.
