Tupper SENDS FOR AN ACTUARY Oregon, Washington and Cal- ifornia Will Combine to Supervise the Examination il An examination of the affairs of the P: cific Mutual Life Insurance Company will be made under the joint supervision of the insurance departments of California, Washington and Oregon. = Arnnouncement of this was made yesterday by Insurance Commissioner Wolf. A request has been forwarded by Commissioner Wolf to 8. H. Wolfe of New York, an insurance actuary and expert, to come to this city and make the examination. The move is in response to a request from Wilbur S. Tupper, presi- dent of the insurance company. Some corréspondence has taken place that Jled to the decision that -has been reached, and this is given herewith: SAN FRANCISCO, March 14, 1906. Insurance Commissioner, State of California, Sacramento, California— Dear Sir: You have doubtiess noted proceed— ings in reference to the amalgamation of Pa- ©ific ' Mutual Life Insurance Company and Con- servative Life Insurance Company. The con- |'solidation will give one strong company for | the coast, which will be the largest west of Milwaukee, and, with two exceptions, the larg— est in the United States not located on the At- lantic seaboard. Standing especially. for the life insurance interests of the Pacific Coast, we shall be glad to have the company examined by the departments ot California, Oregon and Washington upon the completion of all 'the details involved in the consolidation and the change of name. 1 am sending this letter to the departments of the three States mentioned in the hope that they will join in & joint examination of ‘our company during the month of April or May, at your own _convenience. Very respectfully yours, WILBUR S. TUPPER, President. Insurance Commissioner Wolf responded as follows: = SAN FRANCISCO, March 19, - 1906. Wilbur §. . . Tupper, Esq., President Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Com- pany, City— Dear Sir: Yours of the 14th inst., addressed to me at Sacramento, has been forwarded to me here. In reference to your request for an examina- tion to be made of your company by the de partments of California, Oregon and Washing- ton, would state that the annual statements fied by the Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Com- pany and the Conservative Life Insurance Com- pany for the year ending December 31, 1805, have been verified with the books of these companies, ae has been the custom of thie de: partment. -To make a more extended exam- ination, or audit, would necessitate an expendi- ture for which the Legislature has made no proviston. You may remember that when you first ad- vised me of the purposed consolidation of the two companjes, several months ago, you stated that when all the details had been completed you-would deeire a complete examination of the new company at the hands of this depart: ment, and at that time I told you that the Leglslature had not appropriated sufficient funds for this department to permit of the payment of the cost thereof, and you there- upon stated that the company would be willing to-pay-the necessary expenses. Acting upon that suggestion, when in attendance at the conference of Governors; Attorney Generals and insurancé commissioners ‘held in Chicago on February 1, 1 consulted with one of the lead— ing actuariés and examiners in the country and asked him whetherhe-would-be able to under— take the work and he consented. With the understanding that the entire ex- penses of the examination are to be borne by the pompany 1 shall be pieased to comply with your request and consult with the departments of Oregon and Washington in reference thefs- to. Very truly yours, E. MYRON WOLF, Insurance Commissioner. President Tupper has agreed that all the cost of the examination shall Be borne by his company.
