NEW YORK, March 9.—The Hide and Leather Association of New York and vieinity held its third annual dinner last night. The chief spéaker was A. Augustus Healy, first vice president of the United States Leather Company. He said the tariff on hides would make the foot- wear of Americans increase in cost, while it hampered the exports of man- ufactured leather. “Qur expansion would be larger at home,” he went on, “if we were not handicapped at home. The United States does not and cannot produce more than two-thirds of the hides needed by our manufacturers. “Our neighbors in Canada prosper at our expense, 2nd our shoe manufac- turers have been greatly troubled of late.” —_—— CITIZEN SOLDIERS ARE KIDNAPED BY COMRADES Three Members of the First Hiinols Cavalry Foreibly Prevented From Voting at Election. CHICAGO, March 9.—Bound hgnd and foot,” three members of Troop C, First Illinois Cavalry, were kidnaped from their armory last night by three other members, who engaged a teamster to carry them away. They were rescued only after a free for all fight. Later the ringleaders were arrested on the order of Alderman Milton J. Foreman, acting lleutenant colonel of the regi-' ment, and were taKen to a police sta- tion, Aceording to Alderman Foreman, the kidnaping was the result of bitter per- sonal feeling toward the three kid- naped men. The men who carried out the scheme contend that it was done to break up a faction which it ap- peared was about to elect Burt Lloyd as lieutenant of Troop C. Harry Ullum was their candidate for the office. ——— STEEL uflll’l‘l LINGERS LONG AT CARD I‘A‘lnl harles ln-fl'r- © ll. N Uh-yu-n. la.-h. ST. LOUIS, March . ‘harles M. Mirch 9.—Dun's view of trade tomorrow will say: Some irregularity is noted in trade reports for the past, week, but not more than is seasonable, and mercantile col- lections are generally prompt. The few minor strikes do not seriously inter- fere with progress, and thus far the only noticeable effect of the coal contro- versy is the unusdally large demand for this season of the year in all fuel markets and the disposition of small merchants in the immediate vicinity of the.anthracite mines to allow stocks to become depleted. Prices of commodi- tles. rose slightly during February. Dun’s index number was $104,204 on March 1, against $104,011 a month ago, and $101,939 a year ago. Rallway earnings continue to make striking comparisons with last year's figures, the Increase during February amounting to 24.3 'per cent. Foreign commerce at this-port, for the last week, showed an increase in exports of $926,216 over the same week last year, while imports decreased $71,695. Failures this week number against 244 last year, and in Canada 24, compared with 25 a year ago. NEW YORK, March 9.—Bradstreet's tomorrow will say: Spring jobbing trade is as active as ever, excepting last year, at nearly all markets; winter wheat crop reports are excellent; prices, except of some coun- try produce, wheat and flour, among breadstuffs, and bléached cotton good show notable strength, and building ac- tivity, which is of large volume, goes on without a break. Business failures in the United States for the week ending March 8 number 177, against 180 last week and 190 in the Hke week of 1905. Fallures in Canada for the week numbered 24, as against 30 last week, and 40 in this week a year ago. ‘Wheat (including flour) exports from the United States and Canada for the week ended March 8 are 2,563,983 bush- els, as against 1,285,956 this week last year. From July 1 to date the exports are 97,142,555 bushels, against 44,703,369 last year. WILL TRAVEL 40,000 MILES WITHOUT:- CASH Superior General of.Carmel- ite Order Reaches New. ! York From Europe. The Attorney Genehl contends that no new questions ‘were raised in the motion, and alleges that this may be construed to be a preliminary step of the oil people to appeal the case to the Unitea States Supreme Court.
