SCHWAB IS FAR FROM A HOSPITAL SUBJECT Special Dispatch to The Call. KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 8—“Do I look like a subject of locomotor ataxia?”’ sald Charles M. Schwab, as he paced up and down the depot platform this after- noon.. ¢ No, I have no locomotor ataxia and I didn’t put on magie boots, Iam ‘wearing the same pair of shoes I had on when I left New York.” ‘When the Rock Island’s California ex- press pulled into the Union depot this afternoon, Schwab, who “has been re- ported dying, was standing on the back vestibule of his private car, Loretto, laughing and chatting with other mem- bers of his party. s = “Here is the dead man who is making a race for his life across the continent,” said his physician, Dr. Ward, in intro- ducing Schwab to a representative of the press. “I'll leave it to the judgment of You gentlemen if Schwab looks like a candidate for the roughbox.” “I have been slightly indisposed with a severe cold which I contracted in the mining regions of Nevada,” said Schwab, ‘“but aside from that I am just as well as when I heaved billets in the steel mills years ago. I am sure I cannot account for the mysterious manner in which this report of my illness started.” THROWS BABE’S BODY OUT WINDOW OF CAR PORTLAND, March $.—Because -the conductor of a dining-car refused to cremate the body of a stillborn infant, the remains were wrapped in a cloth and tossed from a window of the car a short distance south of Eugene, accord- ing to passengers who reached Port- land last uight on Southern Pacific train No. 12, from San Francisco. A farmer by the name of Carl boarded the train at Galt, Cal, with shis wife and children on the way to Canada. They ‘were occupants of the tourist car. In Southern Oregon the wife was taken ill. No physician was aboard the train, but a trained nurse from Portland volun- teered her services. The child was dead at its birth. The father implored the dining-car conductor to cremate the in- fant's body in the range, but the con- ductor refused; then the father sought other means of getting rid of the child. The body was wrapped in a cloth and tossed through a window. The bundle fell near the tracks while the train con- tinued on its journey. lot on S line of B street, 80 W of Twenty- sixth avenue, W 30 by S 182:6; $10. Fstate of Thomas E. Ryan (by Mary C. W. Halsey Company of San Francisco, at a pre- mium of $11,880 and accrued interest. The Union Trust Company of San Fran- cisco started the bidding at $500, and the agents of nearly a score of financial concerns kept the figures on the jump until A. B. Leitch & Co. of Chicago bid $11,000, and the hammer fell on the raise of the Halsey Company to $11,850. The money will be delivered March 15. It is understood that the bonds will be resold to private Investors in San Fran- cisco. The Legislature authorized $1,000,000 to be spent on the seawall and the aet was approved by the people at the last general election. Other sec- tions of the millon dollar issue will be sold as the work on the new seawall advances. GLENN AND COLUSA PEOPLE INCENSED COLUSA, March 8.~Much indignation is expressed in Glenn and Colusa counties regarding the statements emanating from Red Bluff about the proposed diversiom of water from the Sacramento River. The assertion is freely made that the whole opposition to the bill npow pending before Congress was worked up by persons in Tehama County, who are actuated by mercenary motives. The statements to which such decided exception is taken are those relating to the alleged destruction of navigation. In an interview with one who has given the matter careful atten- tion, the latter said: During the season of low water when the water would be used for irrigation ft has been for years fmpossible for the river boats to go above Chico landing. The river ware- houses at Tehama and Squaw Hill have had no grain stored in them for years for river shipments, owing to the fact that if stored there the grain could not be moved until after the first heavy rain caused the river to rise. It is true that boats are making weekly trips to Red Bluff now, but it is also true that when this condition prevails the farmers of Colusa and Glenn are busy protecting them- selves against flood wate: SACRAMENTO .GAMBLERS MAY HAVE TO QUIT SACRAMENTO, March 8.—At a meet- ing of the executive committee of the Law and Order League tonight a. resolu- tion wasg ‘adopted providing that an open lctter be sent to District Attorney Sey- mour, Sheriff Reese, Mayor Beard and Chief of Police Denny Informing them that, unlawful gambling is being carried on at five places. The attention of the public officials will be directed to the law comprised in section 330 of the Penal Code whiech provides that every person con- ducting or dealing an illegal game is guilty of misdemeanor and all who play against such games are equally guilty, the punishment:to be not more than $1000. Property owners are also to be held responsible for renting their places for illegal gambling and they are called on to read section 331 of the Penal Code which says that such owners are punish- able as provided. SAYS THE DRUMCRAIG WAS NOT SEAWORTHY Special Dispatch to The Cail ASTORIA, Ore., March 8.—“Never did I see a vessel go to sed in’ such condition as was the bark Drumecraig when she put out over the Columbia River bar Sep- tember 22 last,” sald -Captain George Wood today. Captaln Wood was the bar pllot who took the vessel out. *““When I went on board the Drumcraig it was evi- dent that she was top heavy. After ae bar tug had thrown us oft outside the bar I ordered her topsails put on. As soon as this was done she keeled over until her deck was under water and she did not have any buoyancy. I told Captain Me- Callum the vessel was not safe and that she wouid turn turtle if he met with bad weather.” The Drumcraig is long overdue, and it is belleved she has been lost. e s— LATE SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.
