The case is an unusually pathetic one and an element of mystery is at- tached to it. Berthe Clache claims that Gedron, who ‘was a young giant, standing over six feet tall and weighing nearly 250 pounds, had made her his slave for six years, dur which time she sald he beat her an forced her upon the streets to earn a lfv- ing for him. So impressive was her story that the money for her defense has been largely supplied by contributions from, ‘women of New York City. Although the girl admitted that she killed Gerdron, the circumstances sur- rounding the shooting were so unusual that they have given rise to charges that members of the police had secretly urged the girl on. Gedron was shot while une der arrest and walking along the street in the custody of three officers. It is now claimed that $300 which Gerdron Is sald to have had on his person at the time was missing when the contents of his pockets were turned over at police head- quarters. Berthe Clache said that Gerdron brought her here from France when she was years of age and forcibly made her a woman of the streets. On the ht of July 8 she ran from her room com- plained to three officers whom she met that Gerdron had beaten her and that she wanted him arrested. While she was making the request Gerdron himself came “ | up and was taken in charge by the police. It is alleged that he them turned upon the girl, exclatming: “T'll kill you. ou will have me arrested., will yuu" Well, you are as good as dead now.” A moment afterward, when his back was turned, Berthe Clache shot him three times and as she gave herself up to the officers she cried: “T am glad I killed him and I would do it twenty times over. He made me his slave, but he will never raise his hand against another woman.” —_——e——————— GIRL PLEADS NOT GUILTY._-Oskland.
