Duffy, a mining man from Alaska, was brought before United Btates District Judge de Haven yesterday for arraignment upon an indictment charging him with perjury. He pleaded not gullty and his ball was reduced to $3000. The indictment and arrest grew out of a law- sult which Duffy has been prosecuting in the United States Circuit Court against Jafet Lindeberg, John Brynteson, E. O. Lindblom and the Pioneer Mining Com- pany of Seattle, Wash., to recover more than $1,000,00 worth of gold which he al- leged the defendants had fraudulently taken out of the mining claim known as No. 1 Below Discovery, on Anvil Creek, Auditor Horton yesterday reported to ayor Schmitz his discovery of an al- leged overcharge for license blanks, by which he asserts the city has been mulcted in the sum of nearly $1000. The Mayor at once directed Cyril Willlams, expert to the Board of Supervisors, to in- westigate the matter. The report will be filed with the Grand Jury. ° As a result of the discovery the Auditor has held up the last bill presented by Erown & Power, calling for the payment of $367 51 for 1285 pads of license blanks. Should it be found that an overcharge has been made for the four previous lots of blanks furnished to the city the amount named will be refused payment to offset such overcharge.
