White, was on the Governor's slate for appointment to the Supreme Court to fill the existing vacancy. It is said that Judge Monroe declined the pro- motion on the ground that he was so happy in Los Angeles that he could not consent to change his residence. Supe- rior Judges that are in line for higher honors on the bench take into account the fact that the term which the Gov- ernor can bestow will be less than one year's duration. Hence there has been no scramble for the place rendered va- cant by the death of Justice Van Dyke. On the next anniversary of. the birth of Washington considerable attention will be given in California to affairs political. In San Francisco there will be a meet- ing of the State League of Iroquois Clubs for the purpose of declaring princi- ples and devising means for bringing all factions of the Democratic party Into harmony for the State campalgn. In Fresno on February 22 there will be a mass meeting of citizens to form a po- litical organization to be known as the Public Ownership party. The prospectus issued by the promoters of the new party declares: “The people must own, control and operate the railroads and the railroad plants which shall carry the passengers and freight of the nation. The people should likewise own and operate all other At the Girls' High School the after- noon was devoted to patriotic exercises.
