I&—Camnln Bell and other secret gervice officers have arrested two Japanese, Sunada and Sakamoto, for counterfeiting and circulating five-dollar 8old pleces. Another Japanese, Fugimodo, was traced from here to Port Richmond, Cal, where he has been arrested. lIie will be returned here. Captain Bell has obtained a confession from Sunada, which, with corroborative evidence, shows that batteries for plating and molds for cast- ing colns were made in Japan and shipped to Tacoma. According to Bell the case is without parallel on the Pacific Coast on account of the extensive opera- tions and their international scope. Sunada’s correspondence shows the real head of the gang to be Sukekaro Sunada, itving in Hiroshima, Japan. This man shipped counterfeiting machinery here to Sunada, who placed it in operation at Lakehead, on the Tacoma Eastern Rail- road, where the Japanese since arrested were working in a logging camp. Buried in their shack the secret service men found a battery, saltpeter, slag and Dits of metal. The officers have recovered gold coins to the amount of $800. It is belleved many more are in circulation and that this is the gang which has been flooding the Pacific Coast with spurious gold coins. SAYS HE WAS SWINDLED. ) OAKLAND, Jan. 18.—An alleged crooked real estate deal, in which a plece of property at 766 Seventh street ‘was sold to E. J. Lioyd for $7800 by the firm of Kreiss & Horswill, which they had bought for $4200 while acting as his agent and for which they were to receive $150 as their commission, ac- cording to Lloyd, was taken up by Grand Jury this morning upon the com plaint of Lloyd, who claims that he has been swindled out of $3400. According to the story told by Lloyd he engaged A. L. Kreiss and F. H. Horswill to negotiate a trade for him of a lodging house he owned at 976 Sutter street in San Francisco for the prop- erty on Seventh street. and for which he was to pay them $150. In reply to the statement of Lloyd L. Kreiss say Lioyd is an old-timer at this game and he has offered to shut down the investigation if we would cancel the $1000 m The statement that we ram the price up on him is false. He kpows the value of realty as well as we do. The fact s he insisted on the whole thing being finished in one day and in order to megotiate the whole loan we had to put up $1000 of our own money. They got the property according to Lloyd from Max W. Koenig for $4200. Of this amount a of $3500 Was to remain, He clims that they then ran the price up to 37600 and in- creased the mortgage from $3500 to $4500 and through Fred Krause, at torney and searcher of records, h: two mortgages appear as one. Upon this point Leander J. Murphy, also a searcher of records who actual 1y did the work for Krause, stated that he made the search and found twor mortgages, but waa told by Krause to make it appear as though there was but one. The investigation of the mat- ter was not concluded and went over until next Tuesday, * —_— WHIPPING POST NEEDED. OAKLAND, Jan. 16.—Police Judga Mortimer Smith to-day sentenced Wil- liam Jones to serve six months in the City Prison for battery. Jomes grab- bed Miss Carrie Wall as she was walk- ing on Eighth street near Jefferson and tried to kiss her. This morning Judge Smith listened to the arraignment and when Jones pleaded guilty he pro- ceeded to tell the prisoner at bar what he thought of him. “You may have been drunk as you say,” sald Judge Smith, “but that is no excuse for your actions. You frightenea females and tried to attack them and you should be severely punished. If we had a whipping post you would re- ceive the maximum number of lashes. As we have no whipping post, I sen- tence you to the maximum length of service, which Is six months, I wish it were more. —— e REFUSES HER DIVORCE. OAKLAND, Jan. 16.—Mrs. Mary Murphy, who neafly a year ago was granted an interlocutory decree of vorce from Edward F. Murphy, a com mercial traveler, had the decree aside to-day and the case was di missed. There was no reconclliation, but she refuses to get a divorce, she declares, in order that Murphy may not be able to marry a woman with whom he is infatuated. —— LATE SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE.
