A delegation of night school teachers in the grammar grades petitioned for an increase in salaries, to be graduated according to experience d grades. The petitioners asked that the mini- mum salary for the lower grades be fixed at $50 and an increase of $1 per month for every year of experience until a maximum of $60 is reached and that of the higher grades at §55, with a yearly increase up to $65. At Hono- lulu when the health officers came on board every passenger of the Mon- golia was accqunted for excepting one stowaway. The ship was searched for two hours for this missing stowaway, but he could not be found. Just as the Mongolia was leaving Honolulu a Jap- anese rushed to-the ship's side, jumped overboard and struck out for shore. A pilot-boat crew in the vicinity saw the incident, and, thinking the Japanese was trying to desert from the- Mon- golia, gave chase to the swimnier, caught him and took him alongside the Morgoiia, where he was dragged ‘on board.
