The Union Iron Works will do the work for $68,000, and no time will be lost in making A tart, every day the big vessel is m added loss to the Pacific Mail C ish company was such a low bid, it count of the low rate at can get the drydock at In spite of this, however, ship company fa dt v the Oregon and the Algoa will be paired here. On the strength 6f these extensive repairs it fs thought probable, when they are finished, that the Pacific Mail Com will Iy for Ame gister for their big freighter, which now flies the British flag. The accident to the Algoa spoiled what would have’ been the greatest money making record in the history of the big vessel. When-Captain Lockett ran the Algoa on the rocks she v at the end of the second trip she had made across the Pacific within' a re- markably brief time. Going and com- ing each time she had been loaded to | { her full capacity. She had receiv quick dispatch wherever freight was | handled and but for have shown have insured her misfortune a profit smiles for uthority would skipper from those in the Although the ac covered by insurance, the oss through the vessel's idlenegs will be heavy, as there was enough freight offering to have kept the Algoa, big as she is, busy for a long time. = e T Freight Rates Reduced. Coastwise freight rates on lumber have been reduced 3 er 1000 feet. The rate from small and it is partly to induce the mill men to continue runping their plants that the re- duction has been made by the steam schooner peaple. o H el | Two Overdues Safe, | Two vessels of the overdue flect were heard | from yesterday and the reinsu list has | dwindled to the Ems and the Pioneer, each quoted at 15 per cent. The Norwegiar Parknook, which was quoted a arrived safely at Trinidad. The | Julius m, out 138 days from Uha Grande and quoted at 12 pe ported as having been spoken nor location of the speaking | but the vessel's name has ' from among the reinsured. bark = | Costa Rica Is Slow Boat. The Pacific Mail Compan: steamship Costa | Rica, which 1s taking the place of the George W. Elder on the run between here and Port- land, arrived yesterday from the Oregon port nearly half a day late. The Costa Rica takes about ten hours longer than the Elder to make the trip. The Elder is being equipped with oll burners and probably will be faster than | before when she again goes into commission. pictnsd. B Ay Will Discharge at San Pedro. The steamer +#anta Barbara, which was towed into port Monday disabled through the breaking of her tail shaft, left on Monday | evening for San Pedro in tow of the steam schooner San Pedro. The Santa Barbara will discharge her cargo of lumber at the southern port and will be towed back here for repairs. The G. C. Lindauer, which picked up the Senta Barbara soon after the accident and towed her to this point, will discharge her cargo here. S ‘Water Front Notes. The schooner George E. Billings, which went ashore on the Australian coast and later | was floated off, has been repaired and yester- | day salled from Melbourne for Newcastle, | New South Wales. ; The steamship China, homeward bound, left | Honolulu yesterday and is expected here early Sunday. The Pacific Mall Company's new tugboat Arabs was out for a trial spin yesterday after- noon and gave every evidence of being up to the requirements of the contract under which | she was built. The Pacific Mail Company’'s liner Mongolia will be placed on the Hunters Point drydock to-morrow. Her sailing for the Orient has been set for July 29, The steamship Peru will load for Panama at the Little Mail dock and the San Juan, due in a few days, will be docked at the Steuart- street berth mow occupied by the Peru. That She Has Started East to Join Alleged Accomplice STOCKTON, July 19.—When the court convened this morning to con- tinue the examination as to the suffi- ciency of the fugitive warrant upon which the alleged diamond thieves | were held Mrs. Brown-Sabin did not | put in an appearance. Her bail of | $2500 cash was declared forfeited and a bench warrant was issued for her ar- | rest. Her attorneys professed ignor- | ance of her whereabouts. An investigation showed that her | presence in her room at the California | Hotel had been noted as late as 1 o'clock this morning. Later the key was found in the door and it was| found that she had packed her valise | and gone away. It is believed that her love for the man whom she called | Brown and declared to be her hus-| band was the motive for her flight, her desire being to join him, he having' been taken away last night by Sheriff Whitlock of Vermillion County, IL. It has also developed that Kendall is part | negro, his father being a negro. ————— Electrician Escapes Death. Michael Hurley, an electrician, | while at work vesterday in the eleva- tor shaft of a new .building at Third and Mission streets, narrowly escaped being crushed to death under a de- scending elevator. Hurley was plac- ing some electric wire conduits at the bottom of the shaft when the car de- | scended. His shout of warning was | heard just in time by the elevator op- erator and Hurley escaped with sev- | eral bruises. His hurts were dressed | at the Central Emergency Hospital. == e Notice to Passengers. Baggage transferred to and from all trains, | steamers, etc., at low rates.
