The big clock on the tower of the Ferry building got up 7 minutes and 30 seconds late Vvesterday morning. ‘Whether it was an oversleep or a run- down the belated travele. who stood jon the pavement in front of the ! building and scolded it to its face, did | ot know. /Whether it tried to catch up or not only the clock knows, but all |day the the hours swept around the other city dials on time, with the ferry | clock keeping seven and one-half min- utes behind. The loss of those frac- tions of the century was farther reach- ing than a mere mechanical slow-down or a chronological lapse. Prospective transbay passengers sauntering down Market street and watching that clock found the doors closed and their boats a mile away. Every Oaklander on his or her way | home missed the trip by seven and one- | half minutes and had to wait for the | next boat. The man from Sausalito |and the Tiburonian watched their re- spective boats steam away to the north, while the Berkeleyite and citizen of far Alameda sat out a quarter of an hour and mingled their tears together. The waiting rooms were filled with the comers who came too late because of the clock that overslept itself, g Fisher Who Caught Himself. Willlam Douglas of 426 Pacific street yes terday walked from Lombard-street wharf to the Harbor Hospital with a fish pole in one hand and a fish hock in the other. his pole nor was it his hook, but he did not wish to cut the line. But Willlam Douglas stuck to the pole and the hook stuck to him. A small boy had caught a small fish on the wharf and was unable to get his hook out of the mouth of the prize. It stuck far down within the fish's head and no skill on the part of the small boy could make it break its hoid. Douglas, seeing the lad's predicament, volun- teered to separate the hoSk and fish. He did £0, but the hook transferred itself to his hand, where it hung. Even with the boy's assist- ce he could not separate himself from the sharp barb and the aid of the Harbor Hospital surgeon was utilized to that end. As Douglas went out of the hospital care- fully Holding his bandaged hand, he solilo- quized: “Well, T am a sucker, but I caught myseif.” ey L S The Princess Victoria Wrecked. A dispatch from Victoria last night says the fine new steamship Princess Victoria, go- ing at full szeed, twenty knots, ran on the rocks at Prospect Point, Burrard Inlet, Van- couver, yesterday at noon. She was on her way from Victoria to Vancouver. The vessel against the rocks. She slipped off, but before she could be controlled by the helm or backed away the tide dashed her again on the rocks a little lower down the narrows. The vessei was damaged below the water line and the hull for considerable distance abaft the forefoot was crushed in. One of her propellers was disabled, the blades being snapped off. She will go to Esquimault for re- pairs, The Princess Victoria has only been in service two months; She was buflt at Newcastle-on-Tyne at a cost of $250,000. ST g Arrival of the Turret Titania. The Norwegian turret steam colller Titania arrived yesterday from Nanaimo. She Is com- manded by Captain P. M. Foyn, he having superseded Captain H. Egenes, who has re- turned t6 Norway. She brought down 5222 tons of coal for the Western 1 Company. The Titania had fine weather except during the first day out, when the vessel had an op- portunity to test her qualities as a steady sea boat. She cannot roll to any extent in rough water on account of her unusual shape. When she dips to one side and starts to swing the other_way the peculiar extension of the hull beyond the rail is loaded with tons of water. This welght checks the roll considerably or slows down the motion and steadles the ship in & sea way. —_— Notice to Mariners.
