The hoist house was located directly over the shaft, and when the fire oc- curred two miners were at work in the mine and the exit was completely cut off by the fire. Help was summoned from McCabe and Mayer and the fire was extinguished. One man, in his ef- fort to go down into the shaft, fell 200 feet, and is supposed to be dead. As no . communication could be had with the! two miners they also are supposed to be dead. At a late hour this evening rescuers had been unable to descend into the shaft on account of the deadly fumes, but a hose has been sent down through which air is being forced.
