The complaint tells a strange story of bad treatment on the part of the second cabin stewards. All the pas- sengers tell practically the same story under oath to the effect that they had paid $8 each for second cabin pas- | sage from Seattle to San Francisco, good beds and meals being promised !In the advertisement. Daniel Good's complaint is a fair sample of the rest. It is as follow That during said voyage this libelant, Daniel Good, was refused any bedding, blaukets and covering to be used during the nights and was furnished no pillows, but was offered in al for a pillow, and on Wednesaay, the 25th of November, the last day of the voyage, libelant | was unable to obtain any drinking water or | water for washing his face =nd hands. and | that throughout the voyage the steuch in the { meas hall was so unbearable as to czuse libel- ant to become sick and unable to eat, and during the whole voyage the food was of the | worst quality and not decently prepared and was wholly unfit for use or consumption. And | the sleeping quarters were erected from up- rights of wood with strips of canvas hung horizontally thereon, and the sleeper’s quarters were erected so near the toilet us to cause disagreeable and unhealthy odors to permeats | the: whole premises. That notwithstanding at this time berths in the second and cabin lenty of room. - That during the whole voyage libelant was | illstreated and subjected to numercs, indiz- | nitles and four dogs were placed inghe same | apartments as Iibelant. A. G. Micheels complains that he had a narrow .eavas shelf to slee on, with a life preserver for a pillow; that he was objiged to pay the steward $1 for | ill-smelling piece of bed ticking was furnished as a table cloth. Harry Thompson, another libelant, deposes that when he accused the stew- ard of “grafting” that official replied. ‘‘Yes, that's my business. What do you suppose I'm here for?” Joseph Lifiyn complains that on the | fourth day of the voyage there was no | darinking water to be had. | E. Gilbert, David F. Ruff and other passengers depose that they were | obliged to pay 25 cents additional for | each meal furnishéd them by the wait- ler in the captain's cabin, the second cabin food being unfit to eat. Arthur H. Barendt and William P. Hubbard are attorneys for the libel- | ants. + < <+ e column gives the last tide of the ;"-‘;‘:(:x?‘%z when there ar® but three tides. as occurs. :;:‘fi‘xe:n the soundings of the United States Coast Survey charts, exce_t when a minus ¢ sign precedes the height, and then the number given is subtracted from the depth given by the charts. of the lower low waters. —_—e——————— Time Ball.
