L e e e R ] DEGLARES FRUIT GROWING PAYS Board of Trade Defends Fame of a State Industry. - | on legislation. | | Yesterday the State Board of Trade| came to the front to affirm that fruit growing in California is profitable. On_ Sunday—Round-trip tickets to all points beyond San Rafael at half rates. €50 Market street, California fruit growing is not what it has been represented to be. If this idea gets general credence it would largely damage the State. Consequently the State Board of Trade took up the mat- ter, discussed it in the light of reliable statistice gathered from all available sources and adopted the following state- ment officlally: The profitableness of the fruit Industry of California baving been challenged and broadly impeached by certain public statements, thc State Board of Trade, having had these state- merts under consideration, declares as follo The impeachment of the profitableness o fruit growing Is referable wholly to the Juetua- tion of profit as relates solely to the shipment of green deciduous fruit. The shipment ot green deciduous fruit to be profitable demands a system of packing, shipment, refrigeration, not yet been devised. From the centers of fruft growing in Callfornia to the principal ‘markets | of the East the average distance is 2500 miles, The problem of the successful transportation | of green deciduous fruit requires in its solution proper initial handling of the fruit, due consid- eration to the state of ripeness in which the fruit leaves the point of origination, proper re- frigeration en route and careful attention to the condition of the markets in which the fruit | is offered. 'The green deciduous fruit shipments | Those marked (1) to Fairfax, exce On Saturdays the 3:1 runs to Fairfax. FROM SAN RAFAE —Week day 36: are =old by agencies over which the grower has no control. These considerations present ele- ments of extra hazard whereln the result could not be otherwise than disappointing in a very large number of instances. But the profitableness of the frult industry of California rests upon a more secure founda. tion. Cltrus fruits are not perishable, and over 80 per cent of the deciduous frults are cured and canned In an imperishable form. The vi- cissitudes attending this forp of industry are hot greater than those met whth on the: floid" e other industrial activity. Profitable’ industries cannot be judged by fluctuations of profit from year to year. All Industry is attended by Ve:'yln[ conditions, influencing its profitable- ness. It is, therefore, the deliberate con: this board that the fruit growing .,fa'fl{‘;'; of the State of California is highly profitable, and uml this profitableness is assured and perma- nent. This board aleo entertains th opinion that the shipment of gr ‘I."L.i‘:‘;?.flfi fruit will become more profitable as {hat sos of Saterprise le better understood ‘and the pro- ceed relating to the mecessities of the situntion " "olusted to A report for the month of June relating to weather, crops and industrial condi- tions in California was submitted by Man- ager J.
