It will be report. ed to the Department of Agriculture whether the lands in the temporarily re- served tracts are suitable for forestation. Lands that have been denuded and burned over probably will be set outside of the reserves. If this expectation is fulfilled it will do away with any chance that the raliroads or any other corporay tion or person will be able to so dispose of comparatively worthless tracts to the Government and securing for them bet- ter lands, timber covered, in some other locality or localities. Probably all lands that cannot be advantageously forested will be g0 reported on as Ineligible to be a portion of the forestry reserve system in California. Acting in the field at this time are sev- eral agents of the Government, who are instructed to report particularly what ground there is, In every case, for the allegations of frand that have been gi. rected by the miners against the larger timber claimants. The work of the De- partment of Agriculture and of the spe- cial agents who are looking into the min- ers’ grievances in the California field is considered to be most significant. Large results may follow t reports of the investigators if they feturn the facts to Washington eXactly as they are known to residents of California. J. N. In the passirig years these several mines, mostly owned and operated in- dividually, have been consolidated in groups and finaily absorbed by the central company —the Homestake—until these mines, noted in their day. have to a great extent lost their identity. ‘The principal mines and mills of the group originay were the Homestake, at first with a mill of thirty-five light stamps, which was removed in 1878 and a mill of eighty heavy stamps built. This was followed by the High- land Chief with 120 stamps and the Golden Star with 120 stampe; the Caledonia had orig- inally twenty stamps’ some distance from the mine, but Jater built a 60-stamp mill at the mine: the Golden Terra and Deadwood mines had sixty stamps each. These mines after- ward were consolidated and the mills made one by the removal of sixty stamps of the Deadwood to the Terra mill. The Father de Smet had originally ten stamps, but this mill torn down and one ef 100 stamps built. Many changes have since been made until now the Homestake Company operates 900 stamps, The Homestake mine has a record of gold production exceedi.ug $90,000,000. Of this sum $30,000,000 has been profits. $18,000,000 of which has been disbursed to stockholders in dividends and $12,000,000 in the purchase and betterment of property. The Homestake alons has pald over $12,000,000 in dividends In 206 successive monthly payments, covering a period of twenty-four years and eight months up to June, 1908. The Homestake is not a wet mine as compared with some others, still considera- ble water is encountered. The drainage is ef- fected by means of A large pump situated on the 1100-foot level. A brick building, 60 feet long by 20 wide, was constructed in a large chamber cut in the rock for this pur- pose. The walls are 215 feet wide at the base and 2 feet at the top, and 10 feet in height. The roof is arched and at the high- est point is 18 feet above the floor. A brick bullding of these dimensions containing 300,- 000 bricks. 1100 feet below ground.
