His Business Record Dates Back to the Early Sixties. Samuel Foster, president of the whole- | sale firm of S. Foster & Co., at 2i-28 Cali- | fornia street, is dead. His firm is one of the oldest in the city. It was estabilshed | by Samuel Foster, and his history in the commercial affairs of this city is written in the records of the business house that | bears his name. Mr. Foster came to San Francisco in the early '60's. He was a native of Boston and was possessed of the push and energy that have charac- terized that city from early days. He took hold of the first opportunity that came to him and served as a clerk until he.could find a way to establish a business on his own account. The period | A few years after he entered San Francisco he established the firm of Foster & Dole. Mr. Foster's partner was Daniel L. Dol The house was at California and Market streets. The business headed by Mr. Fos- ter never got far from lts original loca- tion. Once it was at 66 California street, but since 1881 it has been at the present place. These facts are quoted to show the con- servative nature of Samuel Foster. Once satisfied that he had done wis: he was | immovable. He prospered from the start. The fluctuations of business found him on the safe side. He built up a reputation for probity and reliabllity that was a source of strength. He was 61 years old. Mr. Foster was high in the Masonic or-| der. He was a member of Golden Gate Commandery, Knights Templar, at the time of his death. He was a prominent member of the First Congregational Church of this city. In all the relations | of life he won respect. He leaves a wife and one son, Lyman D. Foster. The funeral will take place on Wednesday at p. m. from the First Congregationa! Church. { ® Cambuskenneth, for San Francisco: F: ‘antobert, for San Francisco: Br_ship Carmanian, for'San Francisco: Br ship Celtic | Queen, for Acapulco; Br ship City of Agra, fc Honolulu; Br ship Dechmont, for Honolulu: bark Empereur Menelik, for San Francisco; F'r | bark Ernest Reyer, for San Francisco; Br ship ! e e lulu: Br ship California, for San Francis Gen Gordon, for San Franciseo: Br ship Gum ford, for ‘San Francisco; Br ship Herat, fo Honolulu; Br bark Inveresk. for San - Fr bark La Tour d’Auvergne, for San Francisco; schr Marconi, for Honolulu ESRC SR Movements of Steamers.
