Marcum’s Slayerg t.he Hired Tools of Con- spirators. Witnesses Give Testimony With the Greatest Reluctance. JACKSON, Ky., June 12—The feature to-day of the trial growing out of the Marcum assassination was the drift of the evidence toward a conspiracy impli- cating county officers and others and tending to show that Jett and White had | no such motives as the conspirators, but were hired to kill J. B. Marcum, who was the attorney for parties contesting the election of County officiais. The defense during the forencon at- tempted to have the case contigued on account of absence of witnesses and| again in the afternocon on account of the illness of one of the attorneys for the de-| fense. .In both instances Judge Redwine ordered the trial to proceed. Many of the witnesses summoned tes- | tified with the utmost reluctance. When | the court to-day ordered the noon recess earlier than usual, because the next wit- ness desired was unable to go on the wit- ness stand, it was evident that liquor is still available from some source. —_——— Americans at Levee.
