Six Other Defendants Have Punishment Meted Out to Them. AR Sentence was passed by Judge Lawlor vesterday upon seven prisoners. The most important was that of Mrs. Mary Balk- well, a midwife, who was convicted of murder in the second degree for caus- ing the death by a criminal operation of Lottie Peterson, a young girl from Santa Rosa. The Judge sentenced Mrs. Balk- well to serve ten years in Saa Quentin, and she showed not the slightest emu- tion. The Judge in passing sentence re- ferred to the fact that she had a hus- band and three children and had brought | disgrace upon them by her conduct ‘n | acrificing a young life through her igno- | ance of medicine or surgery.
