Signs Point to the Coming of a Great Throng of Visitors. | A joint meeting of the general commit- | tee of management and the finance com- mittee of the thirty-seventh National En~ campment, Grand Army of the Republic, will be held this evening in the rooms of the California Promotion Committee, 2 New Montgomery street. In consequence of the visit of the President it was deemed best to delay the committee’'s operations until his departure. George Stone, chair- man of the general committee, announces | { that now the tlme has come to interest | | the people of the city and State in the en- | campment. In a circular letter to mem- | bers of the committee the chairman says: | We require funds to consummate the vari- ous plans already formed, which are now in progress. We must uphold the reputation for hospitality for which California and San Fran- cisco are renowned throughout the world. 1 The encampment has been well adver- tised throughout the Atlantic and Middle West States. As a result of this enterprise | in heralding in advance the attractions of San Francisco during encampment week a vast throng of vis..ors will accept the | | advantages of the reduced raflway fare | | and come here next August. The general | | committee of management comprehends | that a great deal of preparatory work | | must be done In order to properly recetve | | | | and entertain the legion of visitors. | The encampment will open Monday, | August 17, hence there is no more time | than is required for adjusting all the de- | tails relating to the street pageants, the | fllumination of the city, the campfires, excursions, naval parades and the reunion | of auxiliary organizations. At every an-| nual reunion of the Grand Army of the Republic since 18% veterans have ex- | changed reminiscences of the memorable encampment in San Francisco in August of that year. The desire to ggain visit California became so Intense that when | Major General Shafter proposed in Wash- | ington, D. C., last fall that the encamp- ment of 193 should be held in San Fran- cisco the enthusiasm which greeted the proposition was so tumultuous and pro- longed that the choice of this place was made by acclamation. The claims of oth- er progréssive cities for the honor of se- lection were withdrawn in favor of the metropolis of the Pacific in recognition of the earnest desire of the veterans to pay a farewell visit to California The encampment of 1886 was memora- ble in many respects. The generosity of leading cltizens in contributing to the fund for the entertainment of the veter- ans enlisted widespread admiration. Sev- eral lcading citizens gave $4000 each to the fund. Several more donors gave $1000 | each. There was a long list of $500 dona- tio The sum of $5,000 was readily raised to carry out the plans of the cele- | bration. B News in Army Circles. | Major General MacArthur, accompamed" by several members of his staff, paid an | official visit to Rear Admiral Glass aboard the New York yesterday. { Captain C. R. Howland has been ap- | pointed inspector of small arms practice for the department. | Colonel C. P. Miller has been appointed | a member of the army general staff, and | will leave this city for Washington, D.
