Flames Spring From Sparks Caused by Friction and Spread Rapidly. Within twenty minutes a $%0,000 loss by fire was fncurred yesterday shortly after noon by the American Milling Company at its flouring mill on the corner of Bat- and Union streets. Had it not been for the excellent work of the Fire Depart- ment the new four-story brick structure would have been quickly reduced to a heap of ruins. Despite the fact that the streams from eight engines and a water, tower were | turned upon the flercely burning pile, the fire was not checked until $25,000 worth-of machinery and stock to the amount of | $50,000 had been destroyed and injury to the extent of $15,000 done to the building. A few minutes after noontime to-day Watchman J. A. Guisti, ‘while passing down the Battery-street side of the build- ing, discovered the flames in the south-| east corner of the top story and turned in an alarm. The seriousness of the blaze | was apparent when the first of the fire fighters arrived upon the scene and a sec- ond and third alarm called out eight en- gines, a chemical and water tower The flames had been started by the friction between a pulley and a chute on the rye flour machine, situated on the top | floor of the mill. There being no em- | ployes near the machine at the time, the | flames quickly spread through the medi- | Before a stream was turned on the blaze the whole top floor | was afife and the roof was rapidly going. By carrying hose lines up the fire es- | capes on either side of the building lhe: firemen were enabled to beat the flames back from the windows until the water tower had drowned the blaze in a well The fire underwriters’ and much of the stock on the lower floors was saved by their efforts. C. F. Laumeister, one of the heads of | stated that the bullding and stock were valued at $160,000. Insurance on the building and stock amounts to 45,000. 1t is divided among vario com- panies, as follows: Manchester, §12,000; T.ondon Assurance, $9500: Fireman's Fund, $5000; Colonial, $750 Pacific Underwriters, $750: w York Under- | writers, $500; American Central, $1250; st Paul, $1 American of New Jersey, $1250 Mercantile, $1250. | @ roeosbeb 0000000 @| | 6—Stmr Ruth, for | for Portland COOS BAY—Sailed May San Franciscg; stmr Alllance.
