F Helpless Off Point Reyes and Towed Into Port by ; Tug Deflance. ‘When within 400 miles of the end of a stormy voyage, the British bark Battle Abbey, which was towed into port yes- terday morning by the tug Deflance, rolled out her foremast. In an instant the good ship was a helpless iron tank, down by the head, unsteerable, unsaflable and wallowing in the trough of an angry sea. Her rudder beat a loud tattoo on the vessel's stern and the unshipped steel mast, with its weight of ponderous metal yards and its tangle of wire stays and braces, was hammering away with ter- rific violence underneath the bow. The accident, unfortunate as it was, came at a lucky time for the nineteen mariners who sailed the Battle Abbey from Newcastle, Australia. Northwester- ly sales had made things lively on the windjammer and late in the evening of April 14 sail was considerably shortened. It was a case of all hands when the fore- sail was taken in and both watches were on the yard furling the heavy canvas ten minutes before the mast went over- board. The watch below had not turned in and the deck watch had reached the mainmast when the ship gave a terrific roll. The foremast was jarred off its step and the huge structure sank about three feet. As it sank rigging and stays slack- ened ‘and the mast was without support of any kind when the second roll came. The steel spar buckled over close to the deck. It buckled again as it hit the star- board rail and buckled again under the keel as the vessel rose on the swell. ‘With this tangle of scrap iron and wire tightly wrapped around her nose, the BXB}:”e Abbey staggered along until day- light. Clearing away the wreckage occupied four days. The old-fashioned “few bold strokes with a glittering ax” make little impression where modern steel gear is involved and the cutting away of the wreckage involved much tedious labor with cold chisels and heavy sledgeham- mers. Without adequate headgear the Battle Abbey was in poor shape for making port. The bark Martha Davis, which ar- rived Tuesday night, brought word of the Britisher's plight and early on ‘Wednesday morning Sliperintendent Man- ning of the Spreckels Towboat Company dispatched the tug Deflance in search of the disabled bark. The Defiance found the Battle Abbey at 9:30 Wednesday night about thirty miles southwest of Point Reyes. It was too dark and stormy to do anything until morning, when the tug took hold of the helpless. windjammer and brought her safely to port. The Battle Abbey was eighty-nine days from Newcastle, Australla. Her cargo consisted of 2277 tons of coal. Hans Pratt, the cook, died on April 19 and was buried at sea. He was a native of Bremernaven, 27 vears old. The Battle Abbey went from Puget Sound to Australla and on the outward voyage also lost the cook.
