An inquiry was held yesterday by Cap- tains Bolles and Bulger, United States lo- cal inspectors of steam vessels, into the grounding of the steamer Alblon River | off Bodega Head on April 3. | The story as toid by the master, John Bash, was that the vessel passed Point Reyes at 1:10 a. m. on April 3, the light bearing abeam one and a half miles, when he changed the coursé to north-northwest. He then retired to his room after telling | First Mate John J. Hagen that this| course would not take them clear of Bo- dega Head, and to call him in time after | sighting land so that the vessel could be hauled out. The weather was light and clear with a brisk northwest wind and a chopping sea un the port bow. He | was called at 2:20 a. m. by the mate, who | informed him that they were in a fog/ and he had seen Bodega Head a little| while before, about three or four miles The captain thereupon ordered him | change his course to the northwest t the lead ready. Immediately thereafter he heard the mate call to the | man at the wheel, “Hard a-starboard and heard the order for the slow down | bell. The captain then jumped on the bridge and ordered full speed astern. Then the vessel struck. It was not more than | two minutes from the time the mate called | him until the vessel struck. First Mate John J. Hagen corroborated | the testimony of Captain Bash. He said | that after the ship had gone seventeen and a half miles beyond Point Reyes she into a fog bank, just before which time he had seen the land to leeward. | He then called the captain and informed | him that the land he had seen must have | been Bodega Head. The vessel struck a few minutes, after the course was changed to northwest. The vessel was leaking and the pumps were set to work. All the| passengers were safely landed at 7 o’clock. | Captain Bash, in response to a question by Inspector Bulger, sald that he had been deceived by the mate's statement that Bodega Head was three miles away. The case was taken under advisement. to Cheap lodgings for the poor will be pro- vided in several bulldings to be erected in Vienna on the model of the Rowton hcuses in London.
