The Supervisors’ Committee on Public Utilitles yesterday unanimously reported in favor of the proposed ordinance de- claring that public interest and necessity demand the acquisition of the Geary Street Railway Company's plant by the city upon the expiration of its franchise next November. The ordinance directs the Board of Works to file an estimate of cost of the conversion of the road into afi electric system. The committee also placed on file the Ocean Rallway Company for a new fran- chise, and it was decided that considera- Geary street shall be postponed until after the date of holding the election for the aéquisition of a municipal railroad. Horace Platt, president of the Gea Street Railway, held that it would be uh- fair for the city to exact the construction of a conduit system, saying a trolley sys- tem would cost less. Supervisors Braunhart, Boxton, D'An- cona, Walsh, Loughery, Connor and Cur- tis voted in favor of the bill declaring for the acquisition of the Geary street road. ““We are now paying interest on a capi- talization of $1,000,000,” sald Platt. “In order to comply with the conditions im- pesed upon the granting of this francnise we would have to issue bonds in an amount not exceeding $1,000,000. I am not certain that the receipts of the road would be $200,000 yearly during the life of the franchise.” 7 ASTORIA, Or., April 16.—Over one hundred tons of salmon Were delivered to the various canneries on the lower river to-day. As many fish had been caught before the season opened this morning It is too early to say just how large a run is in the river, but indications are very good for an: unushally large early catch, tion of all applications for a franchise oa | PROPOSED SUITS MAY BE DELAYED Texas Railroad Commis- sioners Will Not Act Hastily. ’ Special Dispatch to The Call. AUSTIN, Tex., April 16.—The members of the Railroad Commission stated to- | day that they would not direct the At- torney General to institute legal proceed- ings against the several railroad proper- ties of the Southern Pacific Company in Texas until the companies had been given a careful hearing. * “Both sides are en(filad to a hearing application of the Geary Street, Park and | and it is not the desire of the commis- on to prejudge the cases,” said Commis- sioner O. B. Colquitt to-day in discuss- ing the proposed suits. ‘““We shall not act hastily, nor do we want our plans in the matter to be made the basis of sen- | sational reports, the publication of which might be used to affect the prices of the stocks of the roads affected.” It was learned from another reliable source that it may be several weeks be- fore the suits are instituted. All will de- pend upon the decision of the United States Supreme Court in the Northern Se« curities case and the outcome of the pro- ceedings which are about to be instituted by the Attorney General of Texas by di- rection of the Rallway Commission against the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Ralilroad Company for the forfeit- ure of its charter because it is controlled by the Southern Pacific and for other stated reasons. e Clerk-Carrier Wanted.
