Central Americans Borrow an Idea and Reap a Harvest. The succulent banana, peacetul as it ap- pears, Is now the source of domestic trou- |ble. Encased in its leathery rind it con- | |tains the seeds of discontent, although | Lo seeds may be visible to the naked eye. | The price has gone soaring upward ani in this fact rests the explanation of the preceding sentences. The banana from Central America led the way in the ad- vance of the market, in the onslaught | upon the pocketbooks of the thrifty householder. To it was due the increase in the monthly fruit bill After a little the banana of other local- ities fell, perhaps slipped is a better word, | | into line and participated in the rise. The | street-corner fruit venders growl and pro- test. The larger retail dealers knit their brows and inquire into the cause. The explanation is that there is a trust among the banana raisers of certain Cen- tral American centers 6f shipment. They | have discovered that there is a benefit to be derived in combination rather than in competition and they have promptly availed themselves of the advantage to be derived from joint action. To make sure that they get the ultimate nickel the Central American fruit grow- ers have adopted the exact plan of selling only by weight. The price when the iruit reaches San Francisco, with the freight added, is 4 cents per pound, in- cluding stem and all, so say the dealers. The bananas are weighed in the cars and only the welight of the cars is deducted in making the bill. Notwithstanding the rise in price the consumption of bananas does not fall off. There are just as many imported and just as many peels on the street for peo- ple to fall on. The outlook for a return | to the old low prices and the system of | buying by the bunch in Central America is not likely to return. The present sys- tem has come to stay. PR The Board of Health yesterday con- demned certain structures in the rear of twenty-six buildings in Chinatown as a menace to the health of the city, owing to their being obstructions in the light and air areas. The Health Officer was in- structed to tear down the obstructions, but the numbers are withheld In order to prevent injunctions being served by the owners of the premises, as in the case of the L. Scatena Company. The structures include four on Clay street, four on Du- pont street, three on Sullivan alley, two on Sacramento street, six on Stolz alley, five on Jackson street and six on Onelda place. Evidence was given by Health Of- ficer O'Brien, Dr. Glennon of the marine hospital service, Chief Sanitary Inspector Hassler and Sanitary Inspector Dickie of the State Board of Health that there is no way of remedying the unsanitary con- ditions in Chinatown except by tearing down the obstructions to light and air. Attorney Riordan, representing the Sca- tena-Giannini Company, owners of the Jefferson block at 6201 Dupont street, no- tificd the board that any repairs or im- provements that the Health Officer de- sired would be made. It was thereupon | decided to postpone the cleaning of the building to ascertain what the owners would do under the Health Officer’s di- rection. Riordan wanted proceedings now pend- ing in court over the tearing down of ob- structions in the rear of 614-620 Dupont street and 747-747% Sacramento street to be abandoned, but the board informed him that it could not consent to any delay in determining its right to put Chinatown in sanitary condition. The board cited the owners of the buildings at 718 and 720 Stockton street and 839 Sacramento street to show cause next Thursday why the structures should not be declared a nuisance and ordered va- cated. o Chief Sanitary Inspector Hassler re- ported that the water in the wells sup- plying “Carville” at the ocean beach had become contaminated from adjacent cess.- pools. The board adopted a resolution requesting the Supervisors to provide for a “septic” tank at a cost of $5000 as a substitute for the unhealthy cesspools. Lean, physical instructor at the | Olymplc Club, secured a warrant from Police Judge Cabaniss vesterday for Lean's arrest on a charge of failing to | provide for his daughter, Alice, a girl | 11 years of age. Lean was arrested later and released on $10 cash bail. The Leans have been prominently be- fore the public for the last year. They | were married on June 11, 189, and on | March 10, 192, Mrs. Lean secured a di- | vorce from Lean. They were remarried | on April 9 and two days later Mrs. Lean | left her husband and again secured a | divorce from him in October last. She | secured the custody of the girl and was | allowed $25 alimony per month. Mrs. Lean declared yesterday that Lean had not paid her a cent .of alimony since the divorce was granted and she alleged that Lean was supporting a woman who lives in Larkspur and refused to sup- port his own child. ————— $100 reward to any one finding, in good condition, a 12-foot Whitehead torpedo, lost about three-quarters of a mile off Hunters Point, San Francisco Bay.
