10 THE fAN FRAN £CO CALL. WEDMNESDAY MARCH 25, 1903 VENTURA BATTLES FOR FIVE DAYS WITH HEAVY SOUTH SEA HURRICANE Terrific Storm on Outward Voyage, but a Sound Hull and Flawless Machinery Bring Liner Out Victor in Fight During Which the Wind Blows With Velocity of 100 Miles an Hour AR IV w eet LUMBER DEALERS FAGE SHORTAG Outside Demands Ex- haust Local Supply of Redwood. + ' |Mill Owners Are Reported i to Have Contracted in Advance. | S Builders and lumber supply houses in this city are in a state of perplexity be- | | cause of the growing shortage of redwood | |lumber suitable for builders’ use. Or-| | @ers cannot be filled by the mills. Where | there have been, in past years, great local | | stecks of redwood lumber there is now | | very little in evidence. In some recent or-| | ders the lumber supply houses have been { compelled to buy sizes larger than were {required and cut them down, losing all /the surplus as waste lumber. This is of particular inter now. East- ern capital has been largely invested in | | | California redwood during the last two | years and the redwood forests have com- | paratively few resident owners in this | | State. The transportation lines are reach- ing out for return freights to fill up the cars that come out to the coast loaded with cotton or other commodity and the | great lumber regions of California have solved the question as to where the freights are to come from. | Some interesting facts concerning the actual condition of the market are sup- | plied by the local publication known as Wood and Iron, which makes a specialty of statistical information about California | and other Pacific Coast grown lumber. | | The prediction is made that there will be au increased cut of 50,000,000 feet this sea- son in Humboldt and Mendocino counties. 1 | Mill owners have practically no lumber for | |sale now, it all having been contracted for. | | Recently the price of redwood was ad- ed $2 per thousand feet to meet in- creased freight rates. The shortage of lumber at this point has | | Leen steadily increasing for some time. | Taking all the shipments, demestic and foreign, of redwood lumber from San | | Francisco in 1902 the cause oflthe short- | lage will be made to appear even more | strongly. The total redwood lumber ship- | in 1%2 amounted to 262,000,000 feet, | s ainst 244,000,000 feet in 1901, a total of | 209,000,000 feet in 1900, of 217,000,000 feet in | 1889 and 155,000,000 feet in 1898. Thus the | redwood shipments for the year 1902 | exceeded those of 1901 by 15,000,000 feet. | The effect is felt locally. i | Kahului; Jap stmr Riojun Maru, for Hong- | kong. | _Arrived Mar 24—Stmr City of Seattle, from | Skagway. He studied under the distingu:slfed painters, Eugene Verboeckhoven and E. R. Maes. Mr. Van Sluys is a painter of rustic life. His early training was thor- ough, and his handling of color is decisive and powerful, while extremely careful and accurate in detail. He is a fine draftsman, but never descends to over elabq- ration. His command of textures in the delineation of ani- mals is supreme, as is clearly evidenced in his fine s.tudy. “The Sheepfold.” It has been his good fortune to enjoy a high degree of deserved popularity. His pictures are in z:cn.t demand both in Europe and America. “The Sheepfold” is one of his best and latest canvases. A great mind once said that all things are beautiful if we but bring to them the eye to see. The genius, gifted with sight more keen, depicts beauties we, less sensitive to na- ture’s pictures, pass by unobserved. Such a gift has Van Sluys, ' the painter of the original of the next Call reproduction. From so poor a place as a sheepfold he finds a subject super_b in coloring and form. The texture of the sheep’s coats is handled with surprising fidelity, comparing not unfavorably with Rosa Bonheur’s unsurpassed work. The coloring throughout is natural and pleasing. The reproduction is by color photography and would with difficulty be distinguished from the original oil painting. The special art paper adds to this effect. .
