CLARK. 2020 Twenty-first street LENA GRUNIG TELEGRAPHS SHE DID NOT KILL HERSELF Letter Left Behind Announcing Her Intention Fooled Nobody Ex- cept the Police. OAKLAND, March 22.—Unwarranted poilce secrecy caused much mystery to be | made of the departure of Lena Grunig, 16 | years old, who left Mrs. L. M. Harrison's residence, 1772 Gass street, Friday after- noon, leaving behind a letter that was to all but Oakland police officials a palpable blind. The girl wrote she intended to drown herself. » | ‘While Chief Hodgkins was busy looking | for a dead body, Mrs. Harrison to-night | recelved a telegram from the runaway | Miss which read: “I have not drowned | ;lyself. Am going through Wadsworth, ev.” Mrs. Harrison says the girl’'s uncle, J. Grunig, took her away. Miss Lena had been the subject of court inquiry. Her mother had placed her with Mrs. Harri- son several months &go and went into court on a writ of habeas corpus to re- gain custody of her Qaughter. Superior Judge Hall did not like the aspect of mat- ters, the women accusing each other, and placed the girl in care of Miss Whitney of the Associated Charities. To settle matters Lena's relatives have taken her cut of the State, according to Mrs. Har- rison. Hodgskins is resting and waiting with | his ear to the ground for a rumble from the direction of the new Board of Police Commissioners. ———————— Weather Report. (120th Meridian—Pacific Time.)
