FAST STEAMERS WILL BE BUILT Pacxfic Coast Compa.ny To Shorten Time to Seattle. Are Planned for North- ern Route. ey > announcemnt was made yesterday frem a reliable source that the Pacific Corst Company, which controls the Pa- cific Coast Steamship Company, is about | Tk to place orders for two big steamers of | the most modern type With a view of put- ting them on the route between this city | and Seattle in competition with the South- | ern Pacific Company's rail service to the | north. Increased traffic from this end of | the route, resulting from the rapid growth is said to have mad®| vantage with the railroad, even to the ex- tent of giving passengers quicker service | between San Francisco and Seattle. At present the Southern Pacific Com- pany’s schedule time between the points mentioned is forty-eight hours, as against about sixty hours which it takes to cover the distance by water, thus afford- ing the rail route an advantage of nearly eighteen hours, which means much to the | majority of the traveling public. It has been calculated by the steamship com- pony that a steamer of elghteen knots will make the trip from San Francisco to ttle in fort hours, or two hours Icss than the railro time. J. W. Lawless, neral agent of the | Pacific Coast Steamship Company, re- turned from the north yesterday, and when asked concerning the story showed a decided dislike to discuss it, but he finaliy admitted that the matter was un- der conslderation, and said that there | of the new boats being | ordered very £oon. “There is certainly need for them,” said Mr. Lawless, “for San Francisco is grow- ing enormously. It was announced in The Cail several days ago that J. D. Farrell, former presi- Gen*. of the Paclfic Coast Steamship Com- pany and lately appointed assistant to Company, was on his way to the coast.
