LADIES OF RANK ~ MAY BE ARRESTED | Berlin Police Say They Aided the Countess Wilecki. | | i i | BERLIN, Jan. 30.—The Countess Isa- belle Wesierska Wilecki, who has again been arrested on a charge of pretending | | to have borne a son six years ago and presenting him as the helr to an estate at Wroblewo, province of Posen, is 57, vears of age and white-haired, though | still an animated, brilllant woman. 8he | was 51 years old when the child was born. | It is alleged that the Countess seemingly | had two ladies of high rank as accom- | plices. These, whose names have not been | disclosed, are sald to have procured the | illegitimate son of the daughter of a rail- | road watchman in Austria and at the proper moment they brought the baby to | the Countess' apartments here. They went, it is asserted, from the railroad | station in a cab, gave the driver a gold | piece as a gratuity-and entered the house, | one of them cartying the baby done up ! in shawistraps, with a breathing space | cut in the bottom of the bundle. The ! ckild, it is further claimed, was probably | drugged, and was apparently kept two ! days in the house before its birth was an- nounced. The servants of the Countess, it seems, did not even know of the pres- | ence of the child. Those nearest to the | Countess took the birth of the child in | good faith. The old @bunt Wilecki, | Wwho was iy fragile health and who was | in Italy a¥ the time, telegraphed to the | amily doctor at Posen to go to Berlin | | and assist in taking care of the mother and child. The doctor came to this city but the Countess would not see him, and | sent the doctor word that she had every| necessary attention. B When the legitimacy of the child was | first contested the Countess averred that | she had the services of a midwife from | Warsaw, who has since died. |REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS. | { i FRIDAY. PRIVATE. CLAIMS PAS3 COMMITTEE Futile Attempt Made by Congressman Payne to Defeat Them. Several of the Bills Acted Upon Date Back to Civil War. —_——— WASHINGTON, Jan. 30.—This was pri- vate claims day of this Congress In the House, and members with bills on the calendar carried everything before them before the committee on the whole. For- ty-five bills in all were acted on favora- bly, despite the efforts of Payne, the Re- publican floor leader, assisted by Cannon and others, to defeat some of them. Many of the claimfs were old, dating back to the Ctvil War, and a few originated prior to that time. The latter were for bal- ances due for carrying mails in the South when the war broke out. Payne was particularly insistent in his opposition to these bills, calling attention to the exposure of the fraudulent charac- ter of many similar claims in the Forty- fitth Congress. He expressed the opinion that all these claims had been pald be- fore. The members interested stood to- gether, however, and voted him down every time he demanded a division. There were several bills to reimburse Postmasters and internal revenue collec- tors for stamps lost or stolen. One was | to pay the balance on a contract for ice furnished the army hospitdls in the Mis- sissippi Valley during the war. The amount claimed is $30.000, and is for ice at the rate of 9 cents a hundred pounds. Among the others were bills to pay George C. Eliison, an engineer at the Cap- itol in the seventies $5000 for the cost of defending himself against the charge of murder; to pay $i000 to the widow of Sam- uel Muhiman, one of the victims of the old Ford Theater disaster, - when the building collapsed upon a number of Gov- ernment clerks who were employed there, and to refund to the customers of Wii- llam Jacobs of Lancaster, Pa., the amount of the counterfeit stamps purchased from him. When the committee of the whale re- orted the bills to the House Payne tried to block their final passage to-day by making the point of no quorum. But the friends of the claims refused to be balk- ed. A motion was made to take a recess until to-morrow morning at 10:30 o'clock in order to continue the legislative day of to-day, and the sergeant at arms and his deputies were sent out to arrest and bring In absentees. It was 8 o'clock at night before the requisite quorum was se- cured to carry the motion and let the session go over until 10:30 o'clock to-mor- row mornng. e Military Court Sentences a Dueli: BERLIN, Jan. 30.—Lieutenant Werner von Grawert, son of the lieutenant gen- cral of that name, and who shot Dr. Aye, a lawyer of Flensburg, through the neck cutting the spinal cord and causing i stant death in a duel fought in the Grune- wald forest January 16, has been sen- tenced by a military court to two years’ imprisonment in a fortress.
