Accidental Union of Chemi- cals Generate Deadly Vapor. ] Hydrocyanic acid gas generated by the accidental spilling of nitric acid on a floor in the seams of which-had accumulated a quantity of cyanide of potassium caused the death on Wednesday evening of Charles Lugenbuehl, an employe of a McKel-plating establishment at 3 Hardie place. Frank Keen and Mads Hansen, two em- ployes of the firm, on Wednesday after- noon, in transferring the contents of a large carboy of nitrie acid into smaller vessels spilled a quantity of the fluid on the floor. The seams of the flooring, which is old, contained an accumulation of chemicals, including cyanide of potas- slum. The dripping nitric acid combined with the cyanide and fumes of the result- ant gas arose from the floor in smoke- like vapor. Lugenbuehl, Charles Heimayer and Aibert Dalbereto were called in to as- sist in clearing away the smoking chemi- cals. They seized mops and buckets of water and responded without delay. Finding the fumes of the gas very strong and fearing suffocation, all but Lugenbuehl discon- ‘tinued operations and repaired to the open air. - I Lugenbuehl, after a desperate fight in the noxious fumes, qucceeded in cleaning up the spilled acid. Dropping his mop and bucket, he made a dash for the open air, but before he could reach a window or door he collapsed. His fellow work- ¥ | men pulled him out of the building and he shortly regained consciousness. He was sent to his home, 49 Zoe street, in a very weak condition. Dr. Speiss of 119 Tenth street was summoned, but in spite of his efforts, at 8:30 o'clock in the -evening Lu- genbuehl expired, polsoned by the deadly fumes of hydrocyanic acid gas. Lugenbuehl was 30 vears of age and a |native of Switzerland. He was acting | treasurer of the Metal Polishers’ Local Union No. 128. He was known among his friends by the name of Buell, which he had adgpted owing to the length of his correct name. Charles Heimayer and Mads Hansen were also affected by the fumes, but will recover. There 1s a law pending before the pres- ent Legislature providing for the equip- ment of plating establishments with ven- tilating fans. —_— JOHN BARNETT HONORED BY FORMER ASSOCIATES Friends Bunqu:f E;Supatlntendent of Public Buildings and Pre- sent Him Set of Silver.
