The officials at |* the Union Iron Works have announced | that a crew of expert submarine-boat op- erators will leave the East for this city in a few Gays and shortly after their arrival the Grampus will be given a run under the waters of the bay. Considerable in- | terest is being manifested in the unde: water trial trip and when it is held it wiil no doubt prove a novel and interesting occurrence. The submarine boat Pike, a sister ship of the Grampus, which is now being constructed at the Union Iron Works, will be launched on Jjanuary 14, at 11:22 a. m." At that time the tide will | be at its highest. The Pike will be christ- ened by Mrs. Frank B. Zahm. R e Mariposa Arrives. On the way up the Mariposa | | ran into a stiff gale and it delayed her | arrival in port several hours. The Fanny in More Trouble. The French barkentine Fanny, which | took fire in the harbor of Tahiti some time ago, is in more trouble. After being re- paired and fitted for sea again the Fanny set sail from Tahith on December 1. She encountered a stiff gale when two days ! out and began leaking at the rate of seven inches an hour. The entire crew was kept busy at the pumps until the | vessel reached Tahiti again on December 4. When the Mariposa left Tahiti the offi- cials had ordered a survey made of the vessel.
