SANTA FE CLERKS WANT TO BE PAID MORE MONEY Railroad Is Asked to Advance Their Salaries Forty Per Cent. LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21.—Efforts are being made by the general office clerks of the Santa Fe system|to- form a union. There are about 150 freignt clerks; -hand- lers ‘and checkers in the employ of the Santa Fe road here and they claim that they are underpaid, inasmuch as they work the same number of hours and per- form substantially the same amount of labor as the Southern Pacific clerks, but receive 40 per cent less wages. The clerks have prepared a schedule, ‘which is now in the hands of General Su- | perintendent Shepherd. In addition to | asking for a 40 per cent increase<in wages, | | the Santa Fe freight and passenger traffic | clerks request gn eight-hour workday and | overtime for anything in excess of eight hours. The Santa Fe clerks in the freight | department are fully organized, under the ! name of the Los Angeles Railroad Clerks and Freight Handlers' Union. Last night a meeting was held to get the general office clerks in touch with the organization, as these men are not yet or- ganized. A rumor to, the effect that the Santa Fe officlals intended pruning the | salaries of its clerical workers in order | | that it might raise the pay of the mechan- cal force has awakened the office em- ployes to the danger of their unorganized | state. 2 —_——— " Weather Report.
