August Deering, alias August Hoffman, alias August Walter, who has served terms in the State’s prison for grand lar- ceny and robbery, was cleverly captured yesterday afternoon by Detectives Me- Dinan sand Wren and several charges of grand larceny will be booked against him., He is being detained in the City Prison pending further investiga- tion. The police were notified by the Oakland authorities that on November 21 a maa giving the name of G. Van Loon had eall- ed at the jewelry store of George Fake and had asked that several ladies’ gold watches be sent to his room at the Ga- lindo Hotel, as his wife desired to pur- chase one, but was sick and unable to leave the room. Seven watches were sent to the room and Van Loon, after getting possession of them, entered an adjoining room and disappeared with them. His description answered that of Deering. Last Monday afternoon a man giving the name of Charles Humbert called at the jewelry store of Rudolph Barth, 141 Post street, and told the same story of ‘| a sick wife wanting to buy a gold watch and at his request Barth went with three watches to 305 Sutter street. The man got the watches and disappeared through another room with them. Barth notified the police and all the jewelry stores in the city were instructed to be on the look- out for the swindler. Yesterday afternoon he called at the store of H. G. Schumacher, 621 Market street, and repeated the stery of a sick wife and asked that three watches selected by him be sent to 26% Kearny street for her inspec- tiof. Schumacher telephoned to police headquarters and when the salesman went to 26% Kearny street with — the watches and was met by the intending purchaser the officers were in waiting and quickly had the man under arerst. The man was Deering, alias Hoffman, alias Walter, and finally admitted that he had done the three jobs. He expressed his surprise that the jewelers were so easily duped. When searched at the City Prison he had $229 in his pockets and several blenk checks. A man answering his de- scription had also been defrauding jew- elers in Sacramento in the same way.
