LANDS PORTION OF NEW CABLE Silvertown Discharges First Section of the Big Rope. —_— Coil Is Lead-Jacketed and Will Run From Station to Surf A PG One-third of a mile of new submarine cable, which is to be laid between here and Honolulu, was landed yesterday from the cable steamship Silvertowa. This section, ‘which weighs about four tons, is of special construction. It is cov- ered with a stout jacket of lead in coils. It will be laid from the cable station on the ocean beach to the surt line and will be the American end of the new cable. Along with the section“of cable there were landed a number of electrical de- vices to be used in connéction with its in- stallation. The cable landed yesterday will be put into place as quickly as pos- sible and the surf end will be in place and ready for splicing to the main cable by the time the Silvertown is prepared to commence operations. The contract for overhauling the Silver- town’s machinery was awarded to the Risdon Iron Works and the work will be done with all possible expedition. Orders were given yesterday to ex- clude visitors from the cable steamship, the engineers in charge being afraid that the curiosity of amateur scientists and the rapacity of the relic hunter might work to the serious detriment of the in- tricate apparatus with which the vessel is equipped. R Henriette and Wisconsin Here. The German ship Henrlette, which sailed from South Shields August 30, and the bat- tleship Wisconsin, from Panama, arrived in the harbor last evening. Both experienced rough weather and considerable damage was dcne to the former by winds and sea. While in latitude 58 south and longitude 64 west the Henriette encountered & severe storm. The mate of the Henriette, Who has been aboard the ship for twenty-three years, says it was the strongest gale he ever experienced. When the storm struck the vessel she braved it for a while, but in the teeth of its increasing fury lost piece by piece of her works. Everything movable about the decks was swept u the waves and carried away. The water battering with awtul force on her cabins, shattered the woodwork aud smashed the windows. The pi- lot _house also suffered. Both chronometers and _the ship's medicine chest were washed overboard, together with all of the captain's clothing. This was not the only incident of Dbad luck that marked the long voyage of the Henrfette. While entering the harbor last night Otto Geise, a sajlor, fell from the fore yarddarm to the fore hatch and sustained What may prove to be fatal injuries, ARy PN Storm Injures Procyon.
